Symptoms of a possible camshaft sensor malfunction in a 2017 Toyota Camry

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, I'm having problems with my 2017 Toyota Camry and I'm starting to get really worried. It has almost 98200 km on the clock and is currently showing some symptoms that make me wonder: The check engine light is on, the engine shows less power, runs rough and sometimes the car won't even start. It also jerks when accelerating and the engine often just stalls when stationary. I suspect that it could be due to a malfunction of the camshaft sensor, but I'm not sure because I was pretty much ripped off at the last workshop visit and therefore don't want to go to the workshop again without precise information. Have any of you ever had similar problems with your car? What are your experiences with the mechanic in this regard? Any information will help me. Thank you in advance!

Hey, I also have a Toyota, but a 2014 Corolla. I had similar problems to yours, but unfortunately the dealer's goodwill had expired. My car was also constantly jerking and had less power. The garage said the problem was the master gear on the camshaft. This is probably more serious than just a camshaft sensor. The guys in the workshop had to do quite a lot to solve the problem. Part of the engine control unit had to be replaced and then everything had to be readjusted. It was annoying and took a few days, but afterwards the car was great again. No more misfires or loss of power since then. I hope it's just as easy to solve for you. Good luck, man!

Hey, thanks for your reply! It's good to hear that everything is back to normal for you. Do you remember the cost of the repair? And have you had any other problems since then? I'm looking forward to hearing how it went for you.

Hey, no problem! I can well imagine that you're a bit nervous. In my case, it cost €695 to repair the encoder wheel on the camshaft. It's not a lot of money, but since then the car has run like clockwork. The malfunction of the camshaft sensor, which I had already mentioned, is also history since the visit to the mechanic. I'm really glad that I got that over with. Fortunately, there have been no further problems since then. Hope that helps you! Fingers crossed that it goes as well for you!

Hey, thanks for the info and the encouraging words! I think that really helps me. 695€ is a lot of money, but if the car runs again afterwards, then it's worth it. Your experience gives me hope that I will soon have this solved too. I'll contact my garage directly tomorrow and make an appointment. Thanks again and have a good trip, man!
