SQ7 Timing Chain Issues Draining Gas and Performance

I have been getting poor engine performance lately with my 2023 SQ7 (193074KM, gas engine). The engine light stays on and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. I suspect there might be an issue with the cam sensor or timing chain affecting the crankshaft to camshaft synchronization. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and what was your experience with getting it fixed? Really want to avoid getting ripped off at the shop.

Had the same symptoms with my 2020 Audi S5. The engine light and poor performance pointed to engine synchronization issues. The diagnostic confirmed a failing crank sensor, which was causing timing problems between the crankshaft and camshaft. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention since incorrect engine timing can lead to engine damage and complete failure. The crank sensor sends vital data to the ECU about engine position and rotation speed. When it fails, the engine runs rough and creates misfires. The repair involved replacing both the crank sensor and cleaning the sensor ring since metal debris had accumulated. The timing belt was also inspected as a precaution. After replacement, the engine performance returned to normal and fuel consumption improved significantly. This repair requires proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. A reputable shop should be able to confirm the issue with sensor data readings before starting repairs. Getting multiple quotes is sensible, but avoiding delays is more important given the risk to engine health.

Thanks for the detailed write-up on your Audi S5 repair. I am dealing with the exact same symptoms on my SQ7 now. The misfire issues and poor engine performance are really concerning. I will get it checked asap based on your experience with the crank sensor repair. Just curious, do you remember roughly what the total repair cost was? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix or have you noticed any other timing chain or engine synchronization problems?

Great update on the crank sensor repair situation. Since seeing the mechanic, they fully resolved the engine synchronization issues by fixing the crankshaft to camshaft reference value that was causing the problems. The total repair came to 340 Euro, which covered replacing the defective crank sensor. The engine has been running perfectly for several months now with no timing chain problems or engine light warnings. Fuel consumption returned to normal levels right after the repair. The mechanic explained that catching the failing crank sensor early prevented any damage to the engine synchronization system. Looking back, getting it fixed promptly was definitely the right call to avoid more expensive engine repairs down the line. A properly functioning crank sensor is critical for maintaining correct engine timing and performance.

Wanted to give a quick update on my SQ7 situation. Finally got it checked out by a mechanic after the engine light stayed on. They found the cam sensor was failing, causing the engine synchronization issues and high fuel use. The repair took about 3 hours and cost 420 Euro total. They replaced the faulty cam sensor and checked the timing chain while they were at it. Everything came back normal with the reference value tests after the fix. Been driving it for about a week now and what a difference, no more engine light, power is back to normal, and fuel consumption dropped back to where it should be. Glad I got it sorted before any serious engine damage occurred. Definitely worth getting these timing-related issues checked out quickly. The mechanic showed me the old sensor and you could see it was pretty worn out. Much better paying for preventive maintenance than risking major engine repairs.
