SQ5 Diesel Performance Drop Points to Fuel Filter

My 2021 SQ5 diesel shows rough idle and power loss lately, also seeing higher fuel consumption than usual. The engine response feels sluggish, especially during cold start. Got an error code stored but hesitant to take it to the dealer after previous bad experience. Mileage is at 17381km. Could this be related to a fuel filter issue? Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and can share their repair experience?

Had nearly identical symptoms on my 2018 A6 diesel. The main issue turned out to be a clogged fuel filter combined with a loose fuel line connection near the filter housing. The rough idle and power loss are typical indicators of restricted fuel flow. A comprehensive diagnosis revealed the fuel filter was severely contaminated, reducing fuel efficiency and causing inconsistent fuel delivery to the diesel engine. The symptoms worsened during cold starts because the system struggled to maintain proper fuel pressure. The repair involved fuel filter replacement and resealing the fuel line connections. This wasnt a major repair but leaving it unaddressed could have led to serious fuel system damage. The diesel engine returned to smooth operation immediately after fixing these issues. The error code likely points to fuel system pressure problems. While DIY is possible, proper fuel system diagnostics require specific tools to test line pressure. Would recommend having it checked soon, as running with a restricted fuel filter can strain the fuel pump. Consider getting the fuel system checked even if avoiding the dealer, these symptoms typically worsen over time and could lead to more expensive repairs if left unchecked.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I also had hesitations about dealer service after some mixed experiences, but eventually found a good independent shop that handled it well. Just wanted to check, do you remember roughly what you paid for the filter replacement and diagnostic work? Im planning to get mine fixed this coming week and trying to budget for it. Also curious if youve had any other fuel system issues pop up since the repair was done? My SQ5 is still running rough during cold starts, so I should probably stop procrastinating and get it checked before the fuel efficiency gets even worse.

Since having my A6 diesel serviced, the fuel filter heater connection issue was fully resolved, it turned out the main problem was a faulty electrical connection to the heating element, which was causing the cold start troubles. The repair cost was 95 Euro to fix the damaged wiring and plug connection. The rough idle completely disappeared after this fix, and fuel consumption returned to normal levels. No additional fuel system problems have occurred in the months since the repair. Looking back, the symptoms you describe with your SQ5 are very similar, especially the cold start issues. Getting it checked sooner rather than later is definitely wise, leaving fuel delivery problems unaddressed can lead to more costly repairs down the line. A proper diagnostic check should quickly identify if your issue is also related to the fuel filter or its heating system. The cold start problems and rough idle you mention are classic signs of fuel system issues that need attention.

After putting off the repair for too long, I finally took my SQ5 to an independent shop last week. The mechanic found exactly what was suspected, a clogged fuel filter causing the rough idle and power loss. They also discovered a minor vacuum leak in the fuel system that was contributing to the cold start issues. Total repair cost came to 280 Euro, including diagnostics, new filter, and fixing the vacuum leak. The diesel engine is running smoothly again, cold starts are perfect, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious damage occurred. Looking back, I should have addressed this sooner instead of worrying about previous bad dealer experiences. The independent shop did great work, took time to explain the issues, and completed everything in one day. No more hesitation if similar problems come up in the future, better to fix small issues before they become major repairs.
