Smart Forfour AC Compressor Failure Repair Guide

Looking for advice, my Smart Forfour (2005, Diesel, 152k km) has developed some serious auto AC problems. The car air conditioning stopped working completely, throwing an error code and warning light on the dash. No cooling at all and the system wont even turn on. Pretty sure its the compressor based on what I researched. Had a bad experience with my usual mechanic recently, so wanted to hear from others who dealt with similar vehicle HVAC issues. Any recommendations on repair costs and trusted shops that wont rip me off? Really appreciate any help on this air conditioning repair.

Had a similar issue with my Smart Fortwo CDI (2008) last summer. The automotive cooling system showed identical symptoms, complete AC failure, warning lights, and no response from controls. While the initial diagnosis pointed to the AC compressor, it turned out the control unit itself was the culprit. The car air conditioning control module had failed due to electrical issues, not the compressor as originally suspected. The repair involved replacing the entire control unit, plus recalibrating the system. This was definitely a serious repair that required specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise with Smart vehicle HVAC systems. Main things to watch for during diagnosis: Whether the compressor clutch engages at all, If the blower motor still works, Whether fuses are intact, Any signs of refrigerant leaks Would suggest finding a shop that specializes in European cars and has experience with Smart cooling system repairs. The job requires proper diagnostic tools and expertise with the brand-specific control modules. Make sure they perform a full system pressure test before replacing any components. Since the symptoms match what I experienced, requesting they specifically check the control unit before assuming its a failed compressor could save significant repair costs.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Smart AC unit issues. My AC repair was actually completed about 3 months ago and everything works perfectly now. Was wondering, did you end up paying a lot for the control unit replacement? Also curious if you had any other automotive cooling problems pop up since the fix? Mine hasnt given me any trouble but always good to know what to watch out for with these systems.

Thanks for following up. After seeing the mechanic, they confirmed it was indeed the refrigerant compressor failure causing the AC unit issues in my Smart. The total repair cost came to 980€ for fixing the defective air conditioning control unit, which included parts and labor. The auto refrigerant system has worked flawlessly since the repair three years ago. No automotive cooling problems whatsoever. The only maintenance I do now is having the AC checked during regular service intervals to catch any potential refrigerant leaks early. A properly repaired control unit should last the remaining life of the vehicle. Just keep the system running regularly, even in winter for a few minutes, to maintain proper lubrication of all components. This helps prevent seals from drying out and extends the life of the air conditioning repair.

Great news, I finally got my Smart AC fixed and wanted to share the outcome. Took it to a specialist shop that really knows their way around auto AC repair. The complete diagnosis showed it was actually a failed AC compressor, just as I initially suspected. Total bill came to 1250€ for the automotive cooling system repair, including a new compressor, refrigerant recharge, and system testing. More than I hoped but worth every cent since the air conditioning works perfectly now. The shop did a thorough job checking for leaks and testing all components of the AC unit. Been running smoothly for 3 months with no issues. The mechanic recommended running the AC regularly year-round to keep everything lubricated, which I've been doing. Really glad I went with a specialist shop, they spotted a few other minor issues in the cooling system that could have caused problems down the line.
