Skoda Roomster Gear Shift Indicator Problem

I am experiencing an issue with my 2015 Skoda Roomster, gasoline engine. The gear shift indicator display in the instrument panel has ceased to function correctly. The symptoms include the inability to engage gears, implausible shifting behavior of the automatic transmission, gearbox slippage, unclean shifts, grinding noises during gear changes, and an error code. My mechanic suspects a defective control unit is the likely cause. The estimated repair cost is approximately 1000€. Has anyone else encountered similar problems with their Skoda Roomster? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interested in knowing if this is a common sensor problem or a known fault with the gear selector mechanism, instrument panel, or car dashboard. The faulty gear indicator affects the car's drivability.

I encountered a similar issue with my Roomster, although I can't recall the exact error code. The gear selector display went haywire, and the transmission started acting erratically. From what you describe, it does indeed sound like a faulty control unit. Have you checked the wiring harness and connectors leading to the gear selector? Sometimes, a loose connection or damaged wire can mimic a control unit failure. Before committing to a new control unit, it might be worth inspecting those.

Thank you for the suggestion regarding the wiring harness and connectors. I haven't checked them myself, as I lack the necessary expertise. Could you elaborate on the location of the relevant connectors and wiring? Are they easily accessible, or do I need to disassemble parts of the car dashboard or center console?

Yes, it mirrors my experience precisely. I didn't attempt the repair myself. I brought the car to the workshop, and they confirmed the defective control unit after running their diagnostics. I suggest you do the same. It's a complex system, and without the proper tools and diagnostic equipment, you risk causing further damage. The connectors are located near the gear selector mechanism, which requires partial disassembly of the center console. I advise against attempting this yourself unless you possess advanced mechanical skills. Considering the symptoms and the error code, a defective control unit is the most probable cause. The 1000€ estimate seems reasonable, given the part's cost and labor involved.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. It seems like I'm dealing with the same gremlins. I've booked an appointment with a trusted local mechanic. They'll run diagnostics and hopefully confirm the defective control unit. I'll post in the thread once the repair is completed. Hopefully, it will also be around 1000€.
