Skoda Rapid Diesel engine issues

Thanks for the quick reply! I did have a quick listen, but everything sounded normal to my untrained ear! How exactly do I check for an air intake leak properly? And is it possible to check the intake manifold myself, or is that something I should leave to a professional? As for the error code, I'd have to check that one again, but I remember something about 'engine misfire'.

Okay, 'engine misfire' combined with the other symptoms really strengthens the intake manifold theory. Honestly, without proper tools, it's tough to pinpoint an air intake leak yourself. You could try spraying some carb cleaner around the manifold and hoses while the engine's running – if the RPM changes, that indicates a leak. BUT be super careful, fire hazard and all that! Given the symptoms – jerking, stalling, error code, strong smell – and the age of the car, I'd seriously consider getting it checked out by a proper mechanic. It sounds like the intake manifold could be the culprit, and if it is a scorching issue, it's probably best left to the pros.

Just wanted to say thanks a million for your help! Took it to a garage and you were spot on - intake manifold. They showed me the old one, and it was scorched alright. Cost me 1180€ to get it fixed, but the car's running smooth as anything now. No more jerking or stalling! Appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

Whoa, sounds rough! Yeah, the symptoms definitely point towards the intake manifold. That jerking and the check engine light? Classic. First thing, have you checked for any obvious air intake leaks? Listen closely around the manifold and hoses when the engine's running, see if you can hear any hissing. Also, what error code did the memory throw? Knowing that will make things clearer. But honestly, a scorched intake manifold at that mileage isn't unheard of. It could also be a gasket leak messing with the manifold pressure.
