Skoda Octavia RS check engine light comes on

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, having some strange issues with my 2018 Skoda Octavia petrol. Black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the engine loses power, runs rough, the car jerks when accelerating and the fuel consumption is also bad. My suspicion is that the lambda sensor heater is faulty. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How did you get this solved in the workshop? I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks in advance!

Hey, no problem! I had a similar problem with my 2016 Skoda Superb TDI. I'm no expert, but I do have some experience with cars. My engine control unit was faulty. Had to go to the garage and the whole thing cost me 1000 euros. It was replaced there quite quickly. Can you perhaps give me some more information about your car? Petrol or diesel? How many kilometers has it done? Have you ever had the fault memory read out? With more information, I might be able to give you some better tips.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Well, my Octavia now has almost 115897 km on the clock. I haven't had the fault memory read out yet, maybe I should do that sometime. And yes, it is a gasoline engine. I just hope that the repair won't be as expensive as yours.

Hi, thanks for the additional information! Your symptoms fit well with a problem with the diesel particulate filter cleaning. However, you have a gasoline engine, so that can't be the case. I had similar symptoms with my Octavia (also petrol and in about the same mileage range). In my case it was a defective divert-air valve. It's not a classic, but after replacing it everything ran like clockwork again. But it still cost me around 500 euros, including workshop time. The workshop found the fault via the fault memory - I would definitely recommend having this checked. With so many symptoms, it can really be a lot of things, and reading it out quickly provides more clarity. Just make sure that they don't just replace the part, but also look at what caused the fault. Sometimes it's just a symptom of something bigger. Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks for your help! That really sounds like a possibility. I will definitely have the fault memory read out. Of course, I hope it will be a little less complicated (and cheaper) for me. But it's good to know that there could be several causes. I'll share my experiences here as soon as I have a solution. Thanks again for your support!

Hello! It seems like the issues you are facing with your Skoda Octavia could stem from a faulty lambda sensor. I would use a scanner to check for this fault. You could also try inspecting and cleaning the fuel system, air intake, and spark plugs. As a last resort you can replace the lambda sensor if faulty. All the best!
