Škoda Octavia Problems with the AGR-Ventil

Engine shuts off by itself

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Strong exhaust smell

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2008 Skoda Octavia Diesel. The engine just cuts out, has no power, runs rough, smells strongly of exhaust and shudders when idling. The check engine light also comes on. I think it could be a functional fault in the EGR valve. Do you have any experience with a problem like this and could you give me some tips on how to fix it? How did you solve this in your workshop? Many thanks in advance!

Hi, I once had a very similar problem with my 2006 Skoda Superb Diesel. I'm not an expert, but I have a lot of experience with cars. My EGR valve was also defective, it was stuck. I had it repaired at my garage, they replaced the old valve and fitted a new one. It cost 355 euros. Could you give me more details about your vehicle? That might help me understand the problem better. Hope this helps you!

Thanks for your answer. My Octavia already has 198765 km on the clock, and the last service was recently. Have you had similar symptoms with your Superb? I wonder if it's worth replacing the EGR valve or if the problem is deeper. Would really like to avoid running to the garage for every little thing. Would be great to hear more opinions! Cheers!

Hey, sure, help where you can, right? My Superb also had these symptoms. The thing rocked like a ship in a storm and stank just as bad. I've been driving mine for over 220000 km now and it had exactly the same crap. In my case, it was 100% down to the EGR valve. The thing was that it was completely clogged and disrupted the exhaust gas flow. And because it was so dirty, it put the engine into emergency running, hence the loss of power and the shaking. Immediately after the replacement, it was as if a new engine had been fitted. No joke! But you'll have to decide for yourself whether it's worth it. The thing doesn't cost the earth, but if it's not that, you've spent money unnecessarily. Maybe it makes sense to have the fault memory read out first, to make sure the problem isn't somewhere else. Just ask the garage what they think. What is it? Do you have any idea whether your EGR valve has ever been cleaned or replaced? That would of course be interesting to know.

Hi, thanks again for your help. I'm not sure if the EGR valve has ever been cleaned or changed. You're right, it would probably be a good idea to have the fault memory read out. I'll suggest that at the garage. Hopefully they'll quickly find out what's wrong. Well, I'll have to get through it... Thanks again for sharing and your tips, that helped me a lot. See you then!
