The problems with the ignition coil and the misfiring have also been resolved since the workshop visit. Nothing else has occurred since the repair. The engine is now running smoothly again without misfiring, the black smoke has gone and the check engine light remains off. I also had no other problems with the electronics or other components. Once it was clear that the engine control unit was faulty, a new one had to be installed and programmed. They also checked the wiring to make sure there were no other electrical problems.
