Skoda Kodiaq RS diesel problems (2018) with the exhaust gas recirculation or EGR valve

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Hello everyone, my 2018 Skoda Kodiaq (diesel engine) has been causing problems for some time. The mileage is 165432 km. Symptomatically it shows the following: - Check engine light is on - Engine turns itself off - Loss of power - Unsettled engine - Strong exhaust smell - Trembling at idle Unfortunately, I had a bad experience at the last workshop visit and now suspect a defect in the EGR valve. Has anyone had similar problems or can share their experiences, especially with regard to diagnosis and repair in the workshop? Thank you!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2015 Skoda Octavia. The symptoms were almost identical: check engine light, loss of power, rough engine and strong exhaust smell. The mechanic found that the EGR valve was defective and partially stuck, which was causing the malfunctions. In the workshop, the EGR valve was cleaned and finally replaced. To do this, they had to remove the valve, which took some time as it is quite obstructed. After the repair, the engine ran smoothly again and the check engine light went out. Yes, it is a serious matter as it can severely affect engine operation if the valve is faulty. I would recommend you get it checked and repaired at the garage as soon as possible. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your reply and the info! May I ask how much the repair cost you? Were there any other problems after the replacement or did everything run smoothly again afterwards? Best regards!

Hey, sure, no problem! After I went to the mechanic, the malfunction in the EGR valve was repaired. The repair, including cleaning and replacement of the defective/jammed EGR valve, cost me a total of €355. After the replacement, everything ran perfectly again, no further problems. The engine is now running smoothly again and the check engine light is off. So everything is great! Hope this helps you! Good luck with your Kodiaq! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info, that definitely helps me. To be honest, the idea of going back to the garage worries me a bit after my last experience. But it seems like it's really urgent. So I'll tell you briefly: I did go to the mechanic after the symptoms got worse. The mechanic looked at the car and immediately identified the EGR valve as the culprit. They cleaned it, but it had to be replaced due to the heavy wear. The whole operation cost me €360, so fortunately it was similar to yours. Since then, the Kodiaq has been running like clockwork again, no more engine misfires and the check engine light is finally off. I'm now really relieved that I did it. I hope that the problem is now really solved permanently. Thanks again and best regards!
