Škoda Kodiaq problems with the DPF

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Hi guys, I'm having problems with my 2017 Skoda Kodiaq diesel, I've noticed black smoke coming out of the exhaust when accelerating, plus the check engine light, loss of power and a strong smelling exhaust. My diesel particulate filter is also no longer regenerating properly. I suspect that the DPF is heavily loaded. Have any of you had similar experiences and can perhaps tell me exactly what the problem is and how it was fixed at the garage? Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi, I had a very similar problem with my 2015 Skoda Superb Diesel, so not exactly the same car but still a Skoda and the problem sounds pretty similar. I would describe myself as someone with little car knowledge. For me, the diesel particulate filter was defective due to high mileage. This led to the symptoms I mentioned. I then had to pay 1550 euros at the garage because the entire filter had to be replaced. That wasn't cheap fun, but afterwards the car ran like clockwork again. To be able to help you more precisely, I would perhaps need a little more information about your vehicle. For example, how many kilometers has it already done? And how often do you drive routes that are short enough for the car not to warm up properly? This helps to regenerate the DPF automatically.

Hey, thanks for your answer. My Kodiaq already has 243567 kilometers on the clock and the last inspection was almost exactly one year ago. I often drive short distances and it's actually rare for the engine to get really warm. The diesel particulate filter sounds plausible. I should probably make an appointment at the garage. It'll probably be expensive, but it's better than a broken car. Thanks again!

No problem, I'm glad if I could help. If I were you, I would definitely make an appointment at the garage. With 243,567 kilometers and short journeys that rarely allow the engine to really warm up, the heavy smoke and smell could probably really be coming from the diesel particulate filter. It's not cheap to replace it, but it's definitely cheaper and safer than driving with a broken car. Your DPF has probably reached the end of its service life and needs replacing. Some garages also offer DPF cleaning, so maybe that's an option for you. Your symptoms sound as if the DPF is full and can no longer regenerate itself. Keep us posted on what the workshop says! Good luck and safe driving!

You're welcome, I hope it helps you. You really should make that appointment with the garage. According to your information - especially the high mileage and the frequent short journeys - this probably fits with an overloaded or defective diesel particulate filter. Repairs are expensive, but bear in mind that a repair is far cheaper and safer than a total breakdown of the vehicle. The DPF has probably now reached its maximum service life and needs to be replaced or cleaned. There are also garages that offer DPF cleaning. This could be an alternative solution. Your symptoms really do indicate a full DPF that can no longer clean itself. Please let us know what the workshop finds. Good luck and happy driving!
