The grille shutter seems to be moving a bit, but not freely. The diagnostic scan did mention specifically 'active air flap malfunction'. Is it common for the electromechanism on these to fail?

Yes, that is a known issue. The electromechanism on the active air flap, also called grille shutter, can fail, especially after a few years. I advise you to visit a workshop to get it checked.

You were spot on! Took my Kodiaq to a trusted mechanic. Diagnostic scan confirmed the active air flap was faulty. Electromechanism kaput, just like you suspected. Repair cost me 590€ but at least no more check engine light and the cooling system is working as it should. Thanks for the help!

Check engine light and overheating with a Kodiaq sounds rough. Active air flap? Is the grille shutter visibly stuck? Did the diagnostic scan specifically point to the air flap or just a general cooling system error?
