Skoda Kodiaq Fuel Consumption Problem

I've got a head-scratcher. My 2022 Skoda Kodiaq, diesel engine, is throwing a check engine light and seems to be drinking more fuel than usual. Diagnostic points to the inlet VANOS mechanics being faulty. Could be a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. I know the BMW VANOS system is prone to oil sludge problems, causing engine misfire or variable timing issues. Anyone seen anything similar?

I encountered a similar issue with my older Audi A4. The check engine light illuminated, and the fuel consumption noticeably increased. It turned out to be a faulty camshaft position sensor.

Was your Audi diesel as well? Did the mechanic mention anything about oil sludge being a possible factor? I've heard the VANOS system can be sensitive to that.

My Audi was petrol. No mention of oil sludge specifically, but the mechanic did say that any contamination could affect the sensor's performance. Considering the cost I would recommend you have the workshop do the repair.

Thanks, that's reassuring. The shop confirmed the inlet camshaft solenoid valve is faulty. Quoted about 250€, which sounds reasonable. Hopefully, that sorts it out.
