Skoda Kodiaq engine control light and noticeable power loss, probably defective EGR valve

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Hello everyone, my 2017 Skoda Kodiaq Diesel is showing some strange problems: Check engine light on, engine stops by itself, loss of power, rough engine running, strong exhaust smell and vibrating at idle. I suspect that the EGR valve (malfunction) could be the cause. Has anyone had similar problems? How did you solve this in the workshop and what were your experiences? I would appreciate your tips and advice. Thank you!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2015 Skoda Octavia Diesel. I have some experience with cars, but would describe it as "limited experience". I had very similar symptoms: check engine light on, rough engine running and loss of power. After a diagnosis in the workshop, it was determined that the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) was defective or stuck. The repair cost me 355.00 euros. The workshop replaced the defective EGR valve and the engine then ran perfectly again. To be able to help you better, it would be good to know whether your car has already been to the workshop for similar problems and whether you have an exact fault diagnosis. Best regards

Hey, thanks for your reply. My Kodiaq was at its last inspection, when it had about 108,765 km on it. I don't have an exact fault diagnosis yet because these problems have only occurred recently. So far I've only had the warning light read out, and the EGR valve was reported as suspicious. I will probably have to go to the workshop. Hopefully the costs will remain within your budget. Best regards!

Hey, I can well understand your frustration. It was pretty similar to yours, but I have a 2015 Skoda Octavia Diesel. I also had the symptoms you describe - check engine light on, engine problems, loss of power and vibrations at idle. In the end, it turned out that the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) was stuck and had to be replaced. I had the diagnosis done at the garage at the time and it cost me a total of 355.00 euros, including spare part and labor. After the replacement, my engine ran smoothly again and the problems were gone. Since the warning light indicates the EGR valve and you have similar symptoms, it really could be the cause. I would recommend that you go to the garage as soon as possible before the problem gets worse. If you're lucky, the cost will be similar to mine. Good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing serious! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your encouragement and advice! I'll arrange a workshop appointment quickly and hope that it really is "just" the EGR valve. Your experience makes me a little more confident that it's relatively straightforward to fix. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the costs remain within reasonable limits and that the problems are history afterwards. Let me know when I know more. Best regards!
