Car won't start

Weak battery when starting the engine

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my 2019 Skoda Kodiaq, diesel, 176,543 km. The following symptoms: longer cold start time, engine sometimes won't start at all, weird engine noises, weak battery when starting, dimming or flickering lights and a warning light in the speedometer. Had a bad experience at the mechanic last time and don't know if I trust him again... Has anyone had similar problems? What was the cause and how did you solve it? And what was your experience at the garage? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I drive a 2016 Skoda Superb, and had similar problems to yours. In my case, it was also a consequential fault in the vehicle's electrical system. The symptoms were very similar: longer cold start times, the engine sometimes wouldn't start at all, and I also had dimming or flickering lights and a weak battery. The workshop first checked the battery and the starter motor. In the end, it turned out that there was a problem with the control unit, which was sending the wrong signals to various parts of the vehicle. The control unit had to be replaced and reprogrammed. This was a serious matter that took some time. After that, the car ran perfectly again. My experience at the garage this time was positive, the technicians quickly identified the fault and rectified it. Although it was a major job, the cost was reasonable. I hope this helps you! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your answer! That sounds pretty similar to my problem. Do you happen to remember how much you paid for the repair? And has anything happened again since then? Best regards!

Hey, I'm glad my answer helped you! After I had the car at the mechanic, the problem with the "engine start possibly not possible" was actually resolved. The whole thing was a consequential fault with the car's electrics, which means that something in the electrical systems had gone haywire and was sending out the wrong signals. The best thing about it was that the cost of the repair was exactly €0. The garage recognized this as a consequential fault, so I didn't have to pay anything for it. Since then, my Superb has been running wonderfully and no further problems have arisen. I hope that your garage is similarly accommodating and that you will soon be back on the road without any problems! Best regards!

Hey everyone, here's a little update on my problem. I finally decided to go to the garage again, despite my bad experience last time. When I arrived, I explained to the mechanic all the symptoms I described: longer cold start times, engine problems when starting, weak battery, flickering lights and the warning light in the speedometer. He took a thorough look at the car and first checked the battery and the starter motor. He then looked deeper into the vehicle's electrics. In the end, it turned out that there was also a problem with the control unit - just like yours. It was sending the wrong signals and causing the symptoms mentioned. The control unit was replaced and reprogrammed. The good news is that the repair was actually carried out efficiently and my Skoda is now running perfectly again. The bad news: The cost was unfortunately not as low as yours after all. All in all, the whole thing cost me just under 500 euros. But at least I now have a working car and hope that I won't need any more visits to the garage for the time being. Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice, it really helped me! Best regards!
