Skoda Karoq problems with exhaust gas recirculation or EGR valve

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Hey guys, my 2020 Skoda Karoq (diesel, 176,543 km) has been causing problems recently: check engine light comes on, the engine shuts off by itself, loss of power, rough running, strong exhaust smell and shuddering at idle. Didn't have a good experience at the garage last time and now suspect a fault in the EGR valve. Has anyone had similar problems and can tell me how they were fixed and what your experience was with your garage? Thank you!

Hey, I have a 2018 Skoda Kodiaq and had a similar problem last year. In my case, it was a defective/jammed EGR valve. Symptoms were almost the same: check engine light, engine sometimes stalled, poor running and strong exhaust smell. The workshop confirmed that the EGR valve was defective. They cleaned the valve and ultimately replaced it because cleaning it was not enough. It was actually a major job because the EGR valve in diesel engines has an enormous influence on exhaust gas recirculation and therefore on the overall performance of the engine. After the replacement, the car ran perfectly again. I can really recommend that you have this checked and repaired as soon as possible. Ignoring such symptoms will only lead to more stress and costs in the long run. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your reply! It's good to know that I'm not the only one with problems like this. Can you remember how much the repair cost? And has anything else come up since then? Best regards!

Hey, yes, I can remember. The repair cost me a total of €355 to fix the defective EGR valve. Since the visit to the mechanic, the car has been running perfectly again without any malfunctions in the EGR valve. It wasn't cheap, but it was definitely worth it because all the symptoms disappeared afterwards and no further problems have arisen. It might also help if you ask your garage whether they can offer a similar solution. Keep your fingers crossed that everything runs smoothly again soon! Best regards!

Hey guys, thanks again for your help and all the info! So, I've now been to another garage and told them the whole story. They checked the car thoroughly and sure enough, the EGR valve was broken. I then had the repair done. It actually cost me a bit more in total, namely €380, but that's probably because a few additional parts had to be replaced on my model. The good news is that my Karoq has been running like a champ ever since! No more check engine light and the engine purrs like new. I'm definitely glad that I tackled this straight away. If anyone ever has problems with their EGR valve, I can only recommend going straight to a good garage and having it checked. Ignoring it really doesn't help and can only get more expensive in the long run. Best regards!
