Skoda Fabia Low Brake Fluid Warning

I have got a head scratcher for you. My 2019 Skoda Fabia, with a gasoline engine, has started throwing up a low brake fluid warning light. The real kicker is the brake pedal now feels all sorts of wrong – kinda spongy and lacking bite. I am thinking it might be worn brakes, but I would love a second opinion before I start tearing things apart. Has anyone else had this gremlin? Is there any chance that I will need a fluid replacement?

Low brake fluid and a spongy brake pedal definitely sounds concerning. I had a similar issue with my Skoda Octavia. First thing I would check is for any visible leaks around the brake lines, calipers, and the master cylinder itself. Are you losing fluid quickly, or is it a slow drop? When was the last time you had a brake inspection? It could be something simple like worn brake pads, but you do not want to ignore it.

Cheers for the quick response! No visible leaks that I can see, which is even more puzzling. Fluid loss seems pretty gradual, topping it up every few weeks. I am leaning towards the worn pads too. When you say similar issue, do you mean the weird brake pedal feedback as well? Was it just the pads in your case?

Yes, I had the same spongy feel in the brake pedal. In my instance, it was the pads and rotors that were the cause. If you are topping up fluid every few weeks, I would advise getting a proper brake inspection by a qualified technician as soon as possible. It is best to get it checked out before it becomes a more serious problem. It is probably worth getting the master cylinder looked at.

Turns out I was right about the worn brakes. New pads and rotors all around, plus a brake fluid replacement. Pedal feel is back to normal and the warning light is gone. Cost me about 480€. Thanks for the heads up! Definitely saved me a trip down the master cylinder rabbit hole.
