Skoda Fabia Combi check engine light illuminated
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Skoda Fabia Combi is experiencing issues with black smoke from the exhaust, a check engine light, loss of power, uneven engine performance, jerking during acceleration, and increased fuel consumption. Possible causes include a defect in the lambda sensor heater, a faulty engine control unit, or issues with the injectors. Suggested solutions involve reading the fault memory to identify the problem and considering repairs such as replacing the engine control unit or injectors, with the latter being a potentially less expensive fix.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I always fill up with Super 95 and the last inspection was about 10,000 kilometers ago, so at a mileage of 79127 km. Now it's a total of 89127 km. The problem with the engine control unit sounds plausible, so I'll have a look. 1000 euros is quite a lot, hopefully it's something cheaper. Thanks for your tip!

Sure, you're welcome! It can't have anything to do with your choice of fuel, Super 95 is perfectly fine for your Fabia. The inspection is also still relatively recent, so you shouldn't have any major wear problems yet. Maybe it really is the engine control unit, but it could also be the injectors. I once had problems with this in my old Skoda and it also caused this black smoke. Replacing the injectors was much cheaper than the engine control unit, costing around 400 euros at my garage at the time. I would still recommend having a fault memory read out if you haven't already done so. This could give you other clues to the problem. If you have this done at a specialist garage, you will also pay around 50 euros for this. I hope this helps you a little!

Hey, it's really cool that you're helping me in such detail. The idea of reading out the fault memory is great, I haven't even done that yet. The thing with the injectors doesn't sound implausible either, that would of course be the cheaper solution. I'll definitely follow your tips and then just see what the garage says. Many thanks again! I really appreciate your help.

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my 2006 Skoda Octavia. I only have a little experience with cars, but I think it may be the engine control unit. My Octavia also had a faulty one and the symptoms were very similar. They replaced it at my garage and it cost me about 1000 euros. I would need a bit more information to be able to give you more details. What kind of gas are you using? And when was your last service? Hope that helps you a bit!
