Seeking Solutions for Engine Issues on '05 Fiat Seicento: Possible Crankshaft and Camshaft Misalignment Suspected

Unsteady engine

Weird engine noise

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Metal shavings in oil

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Hey, I've got a weird one with my 05 Fiat Seicento with a petrol engine. The thing's been shutting off randomly, not starting, and the engine performance is seriously off - losing power and unstable. There's a worrying noise which sounds like metal clanging and I found metal shavings in the oil... yikes! Plus, the check engine light came on. I suspect the crankshaft and camshaft alignment might be the culprit, but I'm no expert. Has anyone had similar issues or knows what I'm dealing with? Especially keen to hear from anyone who's resolved this issue with their mechanic. Cheers!

Hey there, had a very similar issue with my '03 Fiat Punto back in the day. I've got some car experience, tinkered around in my spare time, but not a pro, mind you. I took it to my local workshop, and they diagnosed it as a defective crankshaft sensor. I ended up paying around 250 Euro to get it fixed. Frustrating, but the relief of not having your car randomly shut off? Priceless. I can delve deeper if you give me more info about your Seicento - mileage, how you've been driving it (like a grandma or a rally driver?), any previous issues, that sort of thing. Hope this helps.

Appreciate your response. My Seicento has clocked 83305 km so far, and trust me, I'm no rally driver. Just the usual city commuting. Also, my latest service was just a month ago, and there were no major issues then. Hoping it is just the crankshaft sensor like your Punto and nothing too serious. Looking forward to your thoughts on this.

Ah, given that mileage and your driving habits, it could very well be the crankshaft sensor. Since the engine performance is affected and you're finding metal shavings, it's possible that the sensor's gone kaput and its improper readings are messing with your engine control unit (ECU). That being said, the noise you're hearing might be from worn-out engine parts. I remember when my Punto had these abrupt power losses, the piston rings were not in a good shape and that also led to metal residues in the oil. Maybe you got off lucky at your last service and they just didn't spot it. Either way, best get it checked and sort it ASAP. Don't want any nasty surprises down the line, right? Here's to hoping it's as straightforward as ours! Hang in there.

Thanks a lot for the insight, really helpful. I'll definitely get it checked out ASAP. Fingers crossed it's as simple as the crankshaft sensor, but those worn-out engine parts might be a concern. I'll update the thread after the mechanic's visit. Appreciate you sharing your experience!
