Seeking Solutions for Black Exhaust Smoke, Cold Start Issues, and DPF Regen Problems in 2010 Kia Magentis

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Longer cold start time

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Shaking while idling

Car won't start

Hey! I've been having some issues with my 2010 Kia Magentis running on Diesel and it's been giving me some headaches. Here's the scoop. Been noticing black exhaust smoke when I give it some gas, and she's taking longer than normal to start up when it's cold. Also, I don't think the DPF regen is happening right and there are times it won't even start up. The pre-glow light is playing stubborn and refusing to switch off, and it shakes pretty bad when I leave it idling. Got a hunch it might be a faulty glow control unit but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone faced something similar or knows a thing or two about this? Any suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting this beast would be awesome. And if you've taken your ride into the shop for this issue, I'd love to hear how it turned out. Thanks in advance, car savvies!

Hey! To be honest, I've got just some experience and the same happened to my 2008 Kia Optima Diesel, pretty much the same as your Magentis. Turned out, the culprit was a defective wiring harness from the glow control unit to the digital diesel electronics, as you suspected. Hauled her over to my trusty workshop and they sorted it out. It didn't cost a fortune either - the damage was 155€. But to confirm it's the same issue with your Magentis, do you have any info about your glow plugs? When did you last change 'em, are they original or after-market? More details will help me help you better. Good luck!

Hey! Cheers for the input. To answer your question about the glow plugs, they're after-market and were last changed at my most recent service which was around 116884 KM. What you said about the wiring harness makes sense, hadn't thought of that one. Guess it's high time I got her checked out by a professional. Got a date with my local workshop this week, hopefully it's not too serious or costly. Thanks again for the advice and I'll let you know how things pan out. Safe driving!

Hey there! Happy to hear you're taking action, good on ya! Given the symptoms you described before and the fact that you already switched to after-market glow plugs around 116884 KM, I've even more sure now it might be that pesky wiring harness. Just some advice from my side: When you head to your workshop, make it clear you suspect it could be the wiring harness from the glow control unit causing the issue. It helps them pinpoint the problem faster and you don't shell out extra on unnecessary checks. Hope it's not a big hole in your pocket like mine wasn’t. Keep us updated after your workshop visit. Safe travels with your Kia Magentis!

Hi again, I genuinely appreciate your advice, really do! Will definitely bring up the wiring harness topic with my workshop. Now I feel like I'm armed with some solid info and won't get taken for a ride, cheers to you for that! Certainly, will keep you posted on how it all unfolds. Thanks for the well wishes and here's hoping it's a smooth ride, literally and figuratively, for my Kia Magentis. Safe journeys to you too!
