Seeking Solutions for 2024 Seat Tarraco's Black Smoke Issue, Power Loss, and Suspected Exhaust Gas Recirculation Problem

Loud hissing on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Hi folks, I've been having a pretty strange issue with my 2024 Seat Tarraco (Gasoline engine). Recently, it started kickin' out black smoke when I hit the gas, the check engine light is on, I've noticed a lack of power, and there's a loud hissing sound on acceleration. Also, the exhaust smell is way stronger than usual, and apparently, the DPF regeneration isn't working properly. I suspect it might be something to do with the Exhaust gas recirculation function, but I'm really not sure. Anyone else ever run into this? How did you get it sorted out at your workshop, and how was your experience? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hey! I've got some experience with cars, and I had the same issue with my 2022 Seat Alhambra. It's not exactly the same model but very alike. It cost me 155.00 Euro to have it fixed, turned out to be damaged cables on the electric changeover valve. My workshop did a top job, though. They got it sorted in a jiffy, and gave me a solid rundown of what they did, which I appreciated. I'd highly recommend having a mechanic check to be sure. Just to be able to help you a bit more, what's your engine size and mileage? Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply! Good to know your issue was sorted at a reasonable cost. My Tarraco is a 2.5 L Gasoline engine and I've had her run a solid 136,561 KM till now without major problems. I had my last service, quite recently but this issue popped up just after that. I'll definitely take her to a mechanic to have this looked into. Again, thanks for your help!

No worries, happy to help! Considering the symptoms you've described and your mileage, It could indeed be the Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve as you suspected or it might be a clogged catalytic converter, especially noting that strong smell. Both can cause trouble with the DPF regeneration. The EGR valve might be stuck open, or there may be an issue with the vacuum hose or the aforementioned changeover valve cables. Sometimes decarbonizing the valve clears the issue, other times you'd might need to replace it. As for the catalytic converter, that could also lead to black smoke and that rotten egg smell. Chronic issues with this could risk damage to other components, so it's worth running an emission diagnostic. In my case, the changeover valve wiring issue was the root cause, but the symptoms were less severe, and it was caught quite early as I had an engine management diagnostic run. Either way, getting a full diagnostic done by a pro would be the best route, it might save you from guessing and spending more in the end. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I hope your Seat Tarraco's problem is minor and can be sorted out quickly!

Hi, you're a gem! Your detailed response gives me some solid leads. I didn't even think about the catalytic converter, but the symptoms definitely add up. I'm gonna step on it and get a full diagnostic booked in right away, best to nip it in the bud, eh? I'll keep you updated on the prognosis. Fingers crossed it's nothing major. Thanks again! Enjoy the ride out there!
