Seeking Solution for 2017 Volvo XC90 Diesel's Engine Issues: Unstable Vibrations, Jerky Acceleration, Stalling, and Black Smoke

Hey guys, I'm having some trouble with my 2017 Volvo XC90 Diesel. Recently, it's been acting up with a lit check engine light, lack of power, unstable engine vibes, jerky acceleration, and it stalls when idling. Oh, and there's even black smoke from the exhaust when I step on it. I suspect it could be something to do with the engine's intake quantity. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to get it fixed? Would really appreciate hearing about your experience and what worked for you. Cheers!

Hey there, I've got some experience on this topic. I'm no mechanic but I've been around cars enough to gain some practical knowledge. I had a very similar issue with my 2015 Volvo XC60 a couple of years ago. That's kinda the smaller sibling of your XC90. The symptoms you described - the lack of acceleration, unstable engine performance, even black smoke were identical to what I experienced. I ended up taking her to my local workshop. Turns out there was an issue with a leak in the intake system. They fixed it up and it set me back by 425 Euro. You may want to check that out with your local mechanic. Also, can you share more about your car's status like mileage, last service or any prior issues? It'll help to provide a more specific solution. Hope this helps you out and your car gets back to its prime soon. Cheers!

Hey, Thanks for the insight. It's a bummer but at least, now I've got an idea of what could be wrong. My XC90 has traveled 107,907 KM so far and I did the last service about 2 months ago. There wasn't much issue then other than regular wear and tear. Guess, I'll have to pay my mechanic a visit and have him check out the intake system, like you suggested. Hope it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg. Thanks again for the help. Cheers!

Hello, No problem at all, always ready to help a fellow Volvo owner. The mileage and service history you've shared seems pretty normal and I can remember being around the same in my XC60 when I had the problem. I understand your worry about the cost, believe me. Repair costs can be a bit unpredictable sometimes. But considering we own Volvos, regular maintenance is key to keep them running their best. Checking out the intake system as I mentioned earlier would be a good first step. If it's a minor leak it might not cost much. If your mechanic is a good one, he should be able to give you a pretty accurate esti so you can prepare for it. Remember to take it easy on the acceleration till you get it sorted. The jerking and black smoke point to some serious stuff going on in the engine. Don't want to end up damaging it more. Keep us updated on your progress, and feel free to ask if you need more info at any point, happy to help. Good luck, and hope your Volvo gets back up and running smoothly soon! Cheers!

Hi, Thanks for the reassurance and extra advice! I'll definitely take it easy on the road till the issue is fixed. And considering what you've said, I'll be delivering my XC90 into the hands of my trusty mechanic soon. Fingers crossed that it's just a minor issue. I'll be sure to keep you updated about what happens and might take you up on that offer for more assistance if needed. Again, really appreciate your help - it's made this whole thing less daunting. Take care and catch you later! Cheers!
