Seeking Guidance on Troubling ABS/DSC Warning Signs in 2004 VW Bora

ABS warning light

Fault stored

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hey! I've recently been dealing with some troubling signs on my 2004 VW Bora, Gasoline engine and a decent mileage of 212,581km. Noticed the scary ABS warning light popping on, the ABS/DSC system isn't doing its thing, and there's a warning light in the speedometer. The car also stored a fault. Now, I've had a hunch that the issue could be rooted somewhere in the ASC system. Had a rough ride with my mechanic the last time and I’d rather get some insight before diving back into that world. Anyone here ever dealt with something like this? What was your experience like with the mechanic and what did they ultimately find? Trying to gain some wisdom before I get myself all in a tizzy. Thanks in advance!

Hey! I can totally relate with your situation. I've encountered the same challenge with my 2001 VW Golf which also has a gasoline engine, obviously a slightly older model but pretty similar to your Bora. This is how it went: My ABS/DSC warning light was on too, and the speedometer was showing a warning sign just like yours. The diagnostic result unveiled the 'ASC relay defective' alarming notification. I must tell you, the system fault could indeed be rooted in the ASC system as you suspected. My garage visit confirmed that. The issue was indeed linked to a faulty ASC relay which was messing with the ABS/DSC system. It was an annoying problem but not necessarily something to lose your sleep over. The car functionality overall wasn't influenced drastically as it only affected the stability under certain driving conditions - snowy or wet roads at high speed for instance. The mechanic just had to replace the ASC Relay and reset the system in my case. It wasn't a very complex task but still it took a substantial amount of time for him to diagnose the fault, get the part, replace the relay and reset the system. Hope this helps a bit to ease your mind. And always remember - one step at a time!

Hey there, Appreciate you sharing your experience - really gives me peace of mind knowing what could potentially be the problem. You hit the nail on the head when you said, "one step at a time." Needed that reminder. So, the faulty ASC relay was to blame, huh? Interesting. By the way, if you don't mind me asking, do remember how much you ended up paying to get all that work done? The diagnosis, part replacement and system reset? Just trying to get an idea of what I could be in for. And since getting it fixed, has everything been smooth or have there been any other issues cropping up? Thanks again for your help with all this!

Hey! Yeah, the trouble started with that blasted ASC relay. Who would have thought, right? As for the cost, fixing that little devil cost me 90.00 €. That's including the diagnosis, the replacement part, and the system reset. Not exactly a steal, but worth it to get my ride back to its old self again! And since getting that fixed, my car has been running like a champ. The Functional restriction ASC system has been in tip-top shape, no more warning lights flashing at me while driving. So I'd say it's been money well spent since I can now push the pedal without any worries. I hope that answers your question. Remember to keep calm and motor on, my!

Hey! That's great to hear. €90 for all that seems quite reasonable - not as much as I was fearing. I mean, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind and, potentially, safety. And if your car's running like a champ since then, it's definitely promising. I hope to get my issue fixed soon too. Thanks heaps for all the info and advice. It's been a massive help. I'll definitely remember to keep calm and motor on – love that sentiment! Here's hoping I can report back with a success story soon! Cheers and stay safe on the road!
