Seeking Assistance for 2014 Hyundai i20 Diesel Issues: Black Exhaust Smoke, Check Engine Light, and Poor Fuel Economy

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey everyone, my 2014 Hyundai i20 Diesel is giving me a tough time lately. I've noticed black exhaust smoke when I hit the gas, the engine light's glaring at me, and forget about power; feels like she's lost it big time. The engine isn't running steady, and the DPF doesn't seem to regenerate. My fuel economy's taken a hit too, major one! I'm thinking there's a problem with the diesel particulate filter. Has anyone else had a similar situation? I'd really love to hear your experiences about how you figured it out and fixed it. Any tips on tracking down this beast of a problem would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey! I had a similar issue with my Hyundai i10 2012 Diesel model, and I'd say I've got some level of experience with car tinkering. The symptoms you describe, such as black smoke and decrease in engine power, point to an issue with the Diesel Particulate Filter. In my case, it turned out the DPF was internally defective and needed replacing. I took it to the local garage and coughed up around 1550€ to get the DPF fixed (wasn't a pleasant surprise, I tell ya). Can you give me some more details about your i20? Anything specific in terms of sounds, smells, driving conditions when the problems occur? The more info you give us, the more we can help fix your issue!

Hey, appreciate your input. There aren't any specific sounds or smells I've noticed, but the issue seems to escalate when I'm driving on highways, especially during long trips. As for the driving condition, it's worse when the engine is cold. My i20 has clocked 104916 KM, the last service happened around a month back. Seems like I might have to bear the same DPF replacement cost that you did! Thanks for sharing your experience, though, I'm more prepared for what's to come now. Cheers!

Hey! No worries. Glad to help. The conditions you mentioned surely point towards DPF problems. I remember back when my i10 gave the same problems, the turbo got a hit too. Make sure you get that checked while you're at the garage. It's a bummer about the costs, but in the long run, it's cheaper than a new engine or worse, a new car. Just wish we could have caught it during your last service. My advice, insure your DPF if possible for the future. It's a pricey part that's for sure. Keep us updated so others with similar problems can get a little guidance too. Good luck!

Hey! Great advice! I'll make sure to get the turbo checked when I take my i20 to the garage. Bummer that it didn't get caught during the last service, but hey, what can you do now, right? And that's a worthy tip about insuring the DPF, gotta look into that. I'll be sure to update once I get this sorted. Hopefully, our conversation here will help someone else facing the same issues. Appreciate your time and advice. Take care!
