Seeking advice: Toyota FJCruiser from 2006 starts badly and the lights flicker

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Toyota FJCruiser from 2006 (gasoline engine, 248,823 KM mileage). It starts very poorly and my lights are flickering. I think my problem is the vehicle battery, could be a strong self-discharge. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? I'd like to find a good mechanic, my last experience wasn't that great. Thanks for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Toyota FJCruiser is experiencing poor starting and flickering lights, suspected to be due to a battery issue, possibly a strong self-discharge. Another individual shared a similar experience with a 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser, where the problem was traced to a faulty ECU rather than the battery. The ECU repair resolved the issue, suggesting that checking the control unit might be a viable solution for the FJCruiser's problems. Seeking a competent mechanic is recommended to diagnose and address the issue effectively.

Hey, recently had a similar problem with my 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser. Symptoms were quite similar, but in my case it was the faulty ECU, not the battery. After reading the fault memory, it turned out that the control unit was the problem. It was a complicated issue, certainly not something that is easily overlooked, but after a few days in the workshop the problem was solved. Certainly not a walk in the park, but not the end of the world either, that's just the way it is sometimes with older models. Hope that helps you.

Moin, interesting that your problem was the control unit! Do you happen to remember what you paid for the repair? And since the garage fixed it, has anything else come up, or is your cruiser running smoothly now? Thanks for your help!

Hey, no problem, glad I could help! The repair of the control unit cost me around 600€, so not exactly a bargain, but it was worth it. Since the mechanic fixed it, my Land Cruiser has been running like clockwork. In particular, the issue with the vehicle battery, which was discharging heavily, is no longer an issue. The old darling is doing well again. I hope that reassures you a little!

Yes of course, that really reassures me a bit! I think I'll take my FJCruiser to the workshop and have the control unit checked. 600 sounds a lot, but if it solves the starting and lights issue, then it's worth it. Anyway, I'm glad you told me about your experience - it gives me a starting point and a bit of peace of mind. Now I just need to find a good mechatronics engineer... Thank you in any case! You've really helped me.
