Seeking advice: Seat Altea 2007 with engine problems and increased fuel consumption

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Hi everyone, I have a question. My 2007 Seat Altea has just managed 193621 km. I've noticed a few things now: Black smoke when accelerating, service engine light comes on, the engine just stops, feels like it has no more power, runs unevenly, jerks when accelerating, swallows fuel like a hole, stops when idling and shakes before that! I think it might have something to do with the mass air flow sensor. Have any of you experienced similar problems or can recommend a good mechanic? I wasn't too happy last time... Thank you already!

Hi buddy! Your problems sound similar to the ones I had last time with my 2010 Seat Leon. Black smoke, that peculiarity of just going out.... Very similar! At first I thought it was the turbocharger playing tricks on me. It wasn't a minor fault. Unfortunately, this can happen. If you weren't completely satisfied last time, find another mechanic who is familiar with it. Good luck, dude!

Hey, that sounds like a really annoying problem! That's interesting, the turbocharger could well be the culprit, I hadn't even thought of that. But you say at first you thought it was the turbo. Honestly, how expensive was the repair for you and what was the problem in the end? I really hope I don't have to dig that deep into my pockets. Many thanks in advance!

Hey, you know, I feel you - it really sucks when the car is acting up. But I can reassure you, the visit to the mechanic got my Altea running again without any problems. In the end, it was a defect in the mass air flow sensor. The jerkiness is gone and I swear it drives like new again. It cost me €230 though, in the end it was only a plug connection from the mass air flow sensor that was broken because it was corroded. But it was worth it to me, the thing now runs like clockwork! Since then it's been really great, no more problems. Hope that helps you, man!

Thanks for your answers, guys! It's always good to talk to people who have had similar experiences. I've now decided to take the plunge and go for the mech. Maybe things will go better this time. And the mass airflow sensor and turbo are ha two good starting points. Thanks again!
