Check engine light on

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, I'm kinda worried about my trusty old 2009 Kia Cerato Diesel, racked up 128,811 KM and she's showing some worrying signs recently. The ride's been rough with the engine acting unstable, jerky accelerations, and I'm seeing black smoke puffing from the exhaust when I speed up. To add, my check engine light is on, it's losing power, making a whistling sound, there's a loud hiss during acceleration, and it even stalls and shakes when idling. So, I'm guessing it could be something to do with the boost pressure control position sensor. Anybody experienced similar problems? I'd really appreciate hearing how you tackled it and your experience with your mechanic, especially after a not-so-great last visit to mine. Thanks!

Hey, sounds like you're having the same kind of trouble I did with my 2006 Kia Sorento a while back. The symptoms you described, especially the unstable engine, jerky accelerations, and black smoke puffing from the exhaust, are all pretty similar to what I experienced. Turns out, it was indeed an issue with the boost pressure control position sensor, specifically a faulty electrical bypass valve. The job of the bypass valve is to regulate turbo boost to help manage the cylinder pressure inside your engine. When it's defective, it can cause all the symptoms you've mentioned, from power loss and rough running to the hissing sound and that shaky idle. My mechanic explained to me it's a fairly serious issue - not to frighten you or anything, but it's not something you want to just leave for a rainy day. Mine actually ended up needing a total replacement because it was past the point of repair. After fixing it, most of the symptoms subsided significantly. Car runs really smooth now, so it's definitely worth getting it checked out. Hope things get sorted out for you!

Hey there, cheers for the detailed response! It's comforting to know I'm not the only one going through this. Thankfully your Sorento's running better now. Could you recall roughly how much it set you back to replace the faulty electrical bypass valve? Also, came across any other gremlins afterwards? Thanks again.

Yo, no problem at all, glad I could help. If memory serves me right, I had to shell out around 250 Euro to get the electrical bypass valve replaced. A bit of a hit on the pocket, but honestly, it's been worth every penny seeing how my Sorento's been running since then. Smooth as silk! After the mechanic did some magic on the boost pressure control position sensor, things have been looking up. The nasty business with the faulty valve was pretty much the main demon causing all the chaos with my ride. Since they fixed that up, it's been nothing but clear roads ahead. So hey, don't sweat it too much, there's light at the end of the tunnel! Stay strong and give your old girl the fix she needs, you won't regret it! Safe drives!

Hey champ, your words are pretty reassuring. Looks like I am indeed going to be facing a similar fix with my Cerato. 250 Euro is indeed a bite, but I agree with you, it's hopefully going to be a long term fix rather than a short term patch. It's great to hear your ride is performing well after the mechanic worked his magic. You put things into perspective and I'm now heading in with a bit less worry and a clear approach towards fixing the old girl. Thanks for your advice and sharing your invaluable experience, it means a lot! Here's to smoother, more powerful drives ahead! Cheers!
