Seeking Advice: Common Issues with 2016 Kia Carens Diesel after 60k Kms, Suspected Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Sensor Error

Check engine light on

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

DPF regeneration failure

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Unsteady engine

|

Loss of engine power

Hey! I'm pretty stressed out about my 2016 Kia Carens Diesel (run about 60k kms so far). Recently, it's been acting up - giving off black smoke when I accelerate, the check engine light keeps coming on, the engine power's dropped, it sounds off, and the fuel efficiency's down. I faced a DPF regeneration failure too and I’m assuming it has something to do with an Exhaust gas back pressure sensor error on the diesel particulate filter. Have any of you experience with this? Particularly interested in anyone who's had a similar experience with their mechanic – not exactly had stellar experiences there lately. Hit me up.

Hey, understand your pain. Had a similar issue with my 2013 Kia Sorento Diesel a while back. DPF was heavy-loaded just like you described. Same thing - black fumes, engine light on, crappy fuel economy - whole thing was a headache. Problem turned out to be the DPF, as you suspected. It was so jammed up with soot, it couldn't regenerate properly. And you know what that means, engine's gotta work harder to compensate, hence your power drop. It's not really a quick-fix by the roadside kinda job. Had to get the pros to sort it out at the garage, it's a fairly serious issue. They cleaned the DPF first - trying to remove as much crud as possible. Issue still didn't resolve so ended up replacing the whole DPF unit and that Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Sensor. Don't hesitate to take your Carens in you don't want this issue hanging over you. Hope things turn out better for you, and less stress!

Hey there! sounds like you've been through the wringer with your Sorento. I've been dragging my feet with this whole mess, probably not the smartest move but your experience just shed a lot of light on this. Your DPF and Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Sensor replacement seems to have done the trick. Just out of curiosity, could you recall ballpark what it costed you to get everything fixed? And another thing, since you got it sorted, has your Sorento thrown any other tantrums or everything's been sailing smoothly? Really appreciate your advice!

Hey, took me a moment to recall, but I spent around 1325.00 € to get the whole DPF debacle sorted out. That included replacing the Exhaust Gas Back Pressure Sensor. Not exactly a small sum, but gotta say, it was worth every penny. Ever since the mechanic did his magic, my Sorento's been purring like a kitten, no more tantrums or troubling signs. No more scary check engine light, no more black smoke, and she's back at her best in fuel economy. It's been smooth sailing so far, *touch wood*. Better get your Carens fixed up soon. You'll notice the difference, promise ya! And hey, every cloud has a silver lining, right?

Oh thanks for giving the low-down on all this. The costing part did make my heart skip a beat, but hey, I suppose there's no point in having a ride if it's gonna be faulty and stressful. It's reassuring to hear that your Sorento's been behaving well post the mechanic visit. Gives me hope! I'm definitely going to follow your advice and march my Carens to the garage without any more delay. No doubt, it's probably going to set me back a bit cash-wise but I guess it's the price you pay for peace of mind. And yeah, you're right about every cloud having a silver lining. Maybe this saga with my Carens is a sign that I gotta start looking after her better! Really appreciate you taking the time to give me a heads up. Cheers!
