Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Unusual Transmission Issues in a 2020 Lexus NX Hybrid

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Whining or grinding noises

Hey! I've been having some odd issues with my 2020 Lexus NX Hybrid. Out of nowhere, the transmission's started shifting weirdly, kinda grinding when changing gears. Plus, I've been hearing this annoying whining noise. My suspicion is there could be something wrong with the gear selection display. Has anyone experienced similar problems or have any thoughts on what the issue could be? If you've had to get this fixed in the shop, could you share your experience and any tips for troubleshooting? Thanks a ton!

Hey, sounds like a bummer! I had a rather similar situation with my 2018 Lexus UX Hybrid. It threw me for a loop, I'll tell you that. Just to paint a picture of my car-savvy, I have some experience under my belt, mostly self-taught, but I'm no pro mechanic. Anyway, after a head scratcher of a day and some dodgy gear shifts, I took it to my trusted workshop. The issue turned out to be a faulty wiring harness, which was causing some wacky behavior, much like what you've described. Specifically, the problem cost me a solid 180 Euro to get sorted out. Not cheap, but again, not insanely high either. The important thing is, it did the trick, and my Lexus was back to its smooth-running self again. Just to get the whole picture, could you give a bit more info about your vehicle? Mileage, maintenance history, any recent modifications? Maybe even the conditions when these issues appear? That would help in making a more educated guess on the problem. Hope it helps. Working on cars can be a frustrating process, but the satisfaction when you solve it - priceless. Keep your chin up!

Thanks for the insight! it's good to know I'm not the only one having these issues with a Lexus hybrid. To shed light on my car, it's run up to 81459 KM so far. Generally, she gets regular servicing, latest was just last month. No recent modifications, it's all stock. The gear shifting issue kind of happens at unusual, but I've noticed that weird noise when accelerating, especially on the highway. A wiring harness issue, huh? That definitely gives me something to consider. Guess I'll have to get her checked out by my local mechanic soon. Thanks again, dude. Hoping to get her back to purring like a kitten soon. Last thing I'd want is for this to turn into a money pit!

Absolutely! It's a real downer when your ride starts acting up. And those kilometers you've clocked in with your Lexus, that got my attention. Just as an FYI, sometimes these electrical faults start surfacing around that mileage mark. Well, the fact that your whip is all stock and has been regularly serviced is a good thing. That kind of maintenance discipline goes a long way in keeping the car running smooth. Just to add, that whiny noise you mentioned, particularly during acceleration - if it's a high-pitched noise, it might be the transmission fluid. It could be that it's running low or worse, it's dirty. This also falls in line with your erratic gear shifting observation. I'd reckon your game plan of having your trusted mechanic look at it pronto is spot on. Just a tip, let him have a gander at both the wiring harness and the transmission fluid. Here's hoping it's nothing major and your Lexus will be back on song before you know it. And don't worry about that money pit fear. We've all been there. With the right troubleshooting, it's avoidable. Keep the faith!

Hey, appreciate the detailed response! I hadn't noticed the noise was high-pitched when accelerating, but now that you mention it, I think it could be. Your take on the transmission fluid sounds logical, never thought about that being a potential culprit. Guess I've got my next steps sorted - going to give my mechanic a shout tomorrow first thing and bring up these points. Fingers crossed it's nothing major. I've taken good care of my Lexus, don't want to see her sidelined now. Thanks again for having my back. I'll update you when there's some news. Keep your fingers crossed for me, will you?
