Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Throttle Valve Error and Unusual Fuel Consumption in 2010 Fiat Ulysse

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Hey Car Gurus, I'm dealing with a bit of head-scratcher here! My 2010 Fiat Ulysse has been acting up, with the check engine light on, randomly shutting off, engine losing power, with a choppy ride and some shuddery acceleration. It's also burning through gas at an alarming rate. I'm suspecting it might be a throttle valve error but I'm open to all your thoughts and suggestions. Any advice on troubleshooting this or a similar experience you had would be great. In particular, how did your local workshop nail the fix? Looking forward to hearing your experiences and any repair tips you've got! Cheers!

Hey there! First off, allow me to mention that I'm not an expert mechanic, but I do have some experience with cars (you might describe me as a keen tinkerer). I had a very similar issue with my 2008 Fiat Scudo. It turned out to be an issue with the accelerator pedal module. And it was quite a task to pin it down! The local workshop was key in this saga; they ran extensive diagnostics to finally nail the cause. I had to shell out around 205 Euro to get it fixed, and since then, the problem's been as good as gone. The choppiness, gas guzzling, all of it, improved greatly. So, I'd suggest looking into that aspect. That said, could you possibly share more info about your ride? Miles on it, recent service or part replacements, anything that might help pinpoint the issue a bit more accurately? It'll make it easier for me, or anyone else here, to give you more pointed advice! Hope it works out for the better!

Hey! Thanks for the response and the advice. It's got 117,568 KM on it, and the last service was just a routine one about 6 months ago, can't remember the exact specifics but didn't change anything major. Getting it checked for the accelerator pedal module issue sounds like a good plan. I'll hit up my local workshop and ask them to run a check on it. I hope it won't be a dent on the wallet though. Fingers crossed it's something minor. I really appreciate your help! Cheers!

No worries! Having that mileage and only undergoing routine services sort of affirms my suspicions about the accelerator pedal module. Still, that's just an educated guess from here. Sure, it cost me about 200 Euro, but considering the alternatives, it might turn out to be a bargain. It’s kind of like curing a pesky flu that doesn’t want to leave - once it’s gone, your ride feels so much better. And plus, you get peace of mind, knowing that you won’t have a sudden breakdown on a lonely road at midnight, right? Just make sure you get your Fiat to a good car doctor, have them run a full diagnosis, and insist on a proper quote before they get started. A good workshop will do this for you openly and honestly, to avoid any unwelcome surprises. And just remember, don't panic; more often than not, the issues seem scarier than they actually are. Keep your spirits up! Let us know how it goes.

True that! I hadn't thought about the peace of mind angle, you're absolutely spot on. And indeed, the last thing I want is a midnight breakdown. I'll stop by the workshop tomorrow, insist on a quote before any work starts and give them the green light only if it seems reasonable. I'll make sure to keep ‘Don't Panic’ at the back of my mind even if it does end up a little pricier than expected. Appreciate all the sound advice, cheers! Will keep you in the loop about how it progresses. Fingers crossed for some good news. Take care! Anyways, time for me to call it a day. G’night!
