Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Overheating and Check Engine Light Issues in 2006 Mazda MX5

Check engine light on

Hey! I've got a 2006 Mazda MX5 Gasoline engine running weird lately. It's overheating and the check engine light is constantly on. I'm suspecting the Coolant pump might not be working properly but I'm here for some expert advice. Has anyone experienced something similar and could guide me on how to troubleshoot this? Particularly interested to hear if you've had this sorted in a workshop and what your experience was like. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, your situation sounds pretty similar to something I experienced with my 2008 Mazda CX-5. I'm no car guru, but I do have some tinkering experience under my belt. In my case, the problem was a defective cable on the pump/control unit. I took my ride to my local garage and they got it squared away for about 220 Euro. Now, every issue can be a bit different, so it might be slightly different with your MX5. Do you know if there are any codes stored in your car's computer? Can you share a bit more info about your vehicle? That could help give a better diagnosis for your problem. Hope this helps!

Hey! It's cool that you've had a similar experience. Just a bit more info: the mileage on my car is just 37873 KM, still pretty fresh I'd say. And speaking of codes, I haven't checked those yet. I guess I'll run a diagnosis and see if any codes pop up. Thanks for the tip about the defective cable, I'll definitely have that checked. Cheers!

Hi again, glad to hear I could bring some insight to your problem. With the mileage you got, your MX5 is indeed still pretty fresh. Good job on having that diagnostic run - those codes are key to understanding the real problem. Our faulty cable symptoms were similar. My Mazda was also running a bit strange and the check engine light was on. Do make sure the garage looks at your engine's control unit cables and the coolant pump, given your suspicions. I hope this sorts out your overheating problem. In case they don't find anything there, remember, these could also be signs of a failing thermostat or a blocked radiator - so check that out if the problem persists. Keep us updated on what you find out! Best of luck to you and your ride.

Appreciate your input once again! Sound advice on checking the cables. I'll definitely pass that onto the mechanic. Also, had a gut feel about the thermostat but didn't consider the radiator. I'm more hopeful about fixing the issue now. Will run the diagnosis tomorrow and take it from there. Will surely update this thread when I find out more. Cheers for your help!
