Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Oil Pressure and Metal Shavings Issue in 2000 Kia Retona

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Metal shavings in oil

Oil light on

Hey, got a tricky situation with my 2000 Kia Retona with a gasoline engine. The oil light has been coming on, found metal shavings in the oil, and have a warning light on my speedo. I'm suspecting low engine oil pressure could be the cause. Has anyone got any insights on troubleshooting this or had a similar problem they've dealt with? What was your experience with your garage fixing the issue? Appreciate any advice!

Hey! I had a similar hitch with my 1998 Kia Sportage. I’m not a professional mechanic, but I've done a bit of tinkering with cars. Found the same issue, turned out to be Incorrect engine oil in my engine. Took it to my usual workshop and they sorted it out pronto for 175€. I'd recommend you do the same. Can you tell me more about your oil change habits, the mileage, and if this issue followed any particular event? I might be able to help you better with more info. Hope it helps you out!

Hey, thanks for the input! That might be worth looking into. I typically have the oil changed on the Retona every 5,000 km or so. My odometer's at 79,673 km right now and it's been about 3,000 km since my last oil change. Didn't have any issues then or any events recently that I think could've caused this. I'll probably take it to my local garage, but I appreciate the advice! Any other tips or tricks would be welcomed.

Hey again, given your mileage and how regularly you change your oil, I can't see it being a problem related to your maintenance habits. Although I'm not an expert, metal shavings in the oil may hint towards something more serious, like internal engine wear or damage. Engines start to wear overtime naturally, and small specks of metal may flake off into the oil. That's typical. But if you're seeing a significant amount of shavings, it could signal accelerated wear or failure of certain parts, and that could lead to low oil pressure. Just as I did with my Sportage, taking it to the garage would be the best option. They'll likely flush the engine and check for internal damage. Don't let this put you off - it might seem daft, but it's always better to overreact with car problems than underreact. If there's nothing significant, cool. If there is, they can tackle it head on. Let me know what they say, yeah? Would be good to hear their opinions! Stay safe out there.

Hey, you're a top bloke for helping me out. I wasn't expecting it to be anything inside the engine, but what you're saying makes sense. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Next stop, the garage! You're right, if it's nothing major then smashing. If it is, better catch the issue now. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the advice and reassuring words! Take care.
