Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Erratic Shifts and Grinding Noise in 2021 Kia Ray

Hey! I've recently run into some troubles with my 2021 Kia Ray with a Gasoline engine. Weird stuff happening like erratic shifts, a grinding sound when shifting gears, and also a noticeable whining or grinding noise. I suspect the issue might be with the Converter lockup clutch, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone else experienced anything similar with their car? How did you narrow down the issue and what did the garage do to fix it? Keen to hear your stories or any advice you've got to offer. Thanks a ton!

Hey! Just read through your problem and it sounds pretty familiar. I've got a 2019 Kia Rio, similar model to your Ray, and had the same issue not long back. I'd say, I have a little bit of car knowledge, mostly self-taught. I noticed the same erratic shifts and unsettling sounds. Turned out to be a defective automatic transmission converter. It was a bit of a pain but got it taken care of it by professionals. Took my car to the local workshop - guys there are reliable. The whole recovery process cost me around 2120 Euro. It's a hard pill to swallow, I feel you, but ultimately, it's all about driving safe, ain't it? By the way, can you share more info about your vehicle? Like mileage, maintenance history? Helps in fine-tuning the advice. Cheers!

Hey there, Thanks for sharing about your experience, it does make sense that the problem might be with the tranny! My Kia Ray has clocked in 10994 KM so far, and the last service was just a month ago, so I did not anticipate any issues, really. I hope the repair cost is going to be within budget like yours, especially considering the age of my car. It's frustrating, but yeah, gotta keep the ride safe. Appreciate your help. Cheers!

Hey again, No worries at all, I'm more than happy to help. With your Kia Ray only having a bit over 10k KM on the clock, I totally get why these issues would be a surprise. Usually, transmissions in these new cars last for a long while without a hitch. But, as with all machines, sometimes you just run into bad luck or a dud part. Converter issues can arise due to manufacturer defects too, and I’m guessing that could be your case, especially considering your regular maintenance schedule and the relatively low mileage. Here’s a tip though, check if it’s covered under your warranty, considering that it's only a 2021 model. The repair might even come free of charge! Best of luck with it and drive safe. Cheers!

You're right, I didn't think about the warranty, to be honest. Had the car booked for a checkup this week and I will definitely ask them about the warranty and hopefully, this defect will be covered. Now that you've mentioned it, these unusual defects can indeed be a pain. I guess you really can't predict these things with machines, huh? Thanks again for the tip and your valuable input, it has given me some peace of mind. Safe driving to you too. Cheers!
