Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Black Smoke, Power Loss, and Engine Issues in 2002 Nissan Cube

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Hey fellow gearheads, I'm having a bit of trouble with my 2002 Nissan Cube. Lately, she's been blowing a lot of black smoke on acceleration, the check engine light won't quit, and the engine randomly shuts off. Plus, she's losing power, the engine isn't steady, jerks around when accelerating, guzzles gas like crazy, pumps out a strong exhaust smell, and even stalls while idling. I suspect there might be something wrong with the fuel pump but I'd love to hear if anyone else has experience with these issues. How did you narrow down the problem? Any tips on troubleshooting these symptoms? What was your experience getting it fixed? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hey! I can feel your concern. I had a similar issue with my 2000 Nissan Juke. I'm no mechanic, but I've got some experience poking around under the hood. Turns out my problem was a defective wiring harness/plug, sounds like your symptoms. I took it to my local workshop, they figured it out and solved it for just 95 Euro. How many miles does your Cube have? Has it had regular servicing? It's a bit hard to tell without these details. Hope that helps, and let me know if you have more questions!

Hey there! Thanks for getting back to me. My Cube's got about 195796 KM on her clock and the last service was not too long ago. Your point about the defective wiring harness/plug got me thinking, gonna look into that. Appreciate the help!

No problem at all, happy to help! Your Cube's got quite a few kilometers, just like my Juke had when it cropped up with these issues. Given your last service wasn't too long ago, it does seem less likely to be the fuel pump, but it wouldn't hurt to check either. Check if there are any visible signs of worn-out wiring or connectors near the fuel pump and throttle position sensor. They might be causing intermittent electrical issues, giving you those erratic symptoms. Also, have a peek at the fuel injectors, I had one clogged once and it played havoc with the engine. So, seeing you've got such similar symptoms, it might be worth looking into that. Keep me updated with your findings! Here's hoping for a simple and economically friendly fix to your problem. Cheers!

You're right! It's definitely time to poke around this ol' girl a bit more. I'll have a look at the wiring and connections around the fuel pump and throttle position sensor as you suggested. Also gonna investigate the fuel injectors, that's something I hadn't considered. Appreciate all the advice, I'll let you know what I find and hopefully it won't be too hard on my wallet. Thanks a bunch! Cheers!
