Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting Black Smoke, Bad Exhaust Smell and Power Loss in Hyundai SantaFe Diesel 2000

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, I'm struggling with an odd issue with my Hyundai SantaFe Diesel 2000 model. Been noticing black smoke when accelerating, and an awful exhaust smell. Also, I'm dealing with a stubborn check engine light and a noticeable loss of engine power. DPF regeneration is failing too, I suspect a heavily loaded Diesel particulate filter. Has anyone experienced something like this? Any tips on how to troubleshoot it, or any advice from when you took it to a mechanic? Appreciate any insights!

Hey there, I'm not an auto expert but I do have some experience with cars. A while back, I had a similar problem with my Hyundai Tucson Diesel 1998 model. After noticing the engine light and experiencing drop in power, I took it to the local workshop. Turns out it was indeed the Diesel Particulate Filter that was at fault. With high mileage, it was full of diesel particles and needed to be replaced. The mechanic charged me around 1550€ for the fix which, in my opinion, was pretty fair considering the nature of the problem. It'd help a lot if you could share more info about your car, like mileage, maintenance history etc. It could help figure out the exact issue. Hope this helps and best of luck with your SantaFe!

Hey! Thanks for the reply and that sounds about right. Currently, my old beauty has clocked 57205 KM. Last service was done just recently, and everything seemed fine at that time. Apart from this issue, the car has been pretty reliable. I guess I need to bite the bullet and take it in to have the DPF checked, even though I was hoping to DIY as much as I could! Thanks again for your insights, they're much appreciated. Cheers!

Hey again, No problem, glad to share the info! From your mileage, it does sound quite plausible that the DPF could be heavily loaded. Over time and with kilometers of use, they do tend to fill up and can cause the symptoms you're experiencing. With your car standing at 57205 KM, it's not unusual at all. Trying to DIY can be a great cost-efficient move, but I'd recommend consulting with a mechanic for such issues. They can perform a proper diagnostic scan to find out exactly what's causing the problems. Remember, even if you decide to replace it yourself, you might still need to get the new DPF registered with the vehicle's ECU by a professional anyway. Best of luck with your SantaFe and keep us updated! It's always beneficial for us to learn from each other's experiences. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the detailed advice! I completely agree, as much as I wanted to keep things DIY, some things are best left to the professionals. It’s time to book a mechanic’s appointment then, and hope for the best. Will definitely keep you all posted on the progress. After all, we all gain from sharing our car adventures! Thanks again for the help, really appreciate it! See you around! Cheers.
