Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting 2018 Mazda 2 Diesel Engine: ABS Light and Unusual Noises

ABS warning light

Whining or grinding noises

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey everyone, I'm having a bit of a problem with my '18 Mazda 2, diesel engine. It's been shifting strangely, my ABS light's on, and I've noticed some strange grinding and whining sounds. I have a hunch that the transfer case emergency running control might be the culprit but would really appreciate any experienced advice on pinpointing and troubleshooting this issue. Would love to hear how you guys tackled and fixed the problem when you faced it. Thanks in advance!

Hey! Didn't have much car savvy until I had a similar issue on my own '16 Mazda 3 with an old diesel engine. Issue was a bit different though. My ABS lamp flashed once in a while and I did hear some grinding noises but, no whining sounds. Turned out to be a consequential error in the dynamic stability control. My (he's a car mechanic) checked it out and managed to sort it without charging me. Can you give some more details on how your car is behaving when it makes these noises and when your ABS light comes on? Might help me to give some more specific advice. Best of luck.

Hey there, Thanks for the advice really helps. So, let's see. The noises happen primarily when the car's switching between gears, although the whining does appear at other moments too. As for the ABS light, it unusually flickers on while driving and stays illuminated, doesn't really seem to correlate with the noises or the shifting. I've got about 62631 km on her, last service was a few months back. Not sure if that helps but I await any insights you might have! Chin up!

Hey again, Starting to see a bit clearer now, thanks for the extra info. The whining sound could potentially be the transmission fluid pump, especially since it's happening when your car's switching gears. This is often a common issue with Mazdas, not to scare you, but it could be an early sign of transmission failure. As for your ABS light, it could be a whole host of things. You could be looking at anything from a faulty ABS sensor (pretty inexpensive to replace, by the way) to potential issues with your wheel bearings. It might also just be the ABS control unit getting a bit antsy. I'd recommend getting a mechanic to run a diagnostic check. Knowing the exact cause will save you a lot of expensive trouble down the line. And, just from experience, it doesn't sound like your Transfer case emergency running control. Hope this helps and best of luck! Keep us in the loop. Take care.

Hey! Deeply appreciate your help! Yes, transmission failure is a scary prospect but hopefully it isn't that severe. The point about the ABS sensor and wheel bearings is something I hadn't considered, thanks! I agree, it's high time I get it diagnosed by a professional mechanic. Don't want to cause further damage ignoring it. I'll definitely keep you updated once I've got it all sorted. Hoping for the best! Cheers! Stay safe.

Upgrading your battery from 50Ah to 65Ah should not be a problem as long as the physical dimensions of the battery fit your car's battery tray and the terminals are in the correct location. However, it's always a good idea to consult with your car's manufacturer or a professional mechanic to ensure compatibility. After the battery change, you might need to reset some systems (like i-stop) according to your car's manual. Please let us know how it goes and if you have any further questions.
