Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting 2014 Kia Pro Ceed's Electric Handbrake Malfunction

Electical handbrake is not working

Hey! I'm having a bit of a weird one with my 2014 Kia Pro Ceed, Gasoline engine. It seems the electric handbrake isn't working as it should. I'm guessing it's some sort of malfunction with the handbrake itself, but I'm not quite sure. Anyone else come across something similar and have any advice on troubleshooting this? Specifically, if you've taken your car to the workshop for this issue, could you share how they got it fixed? Really appreciate any insight you can offer on this.

Hey! I’ve encountered a somewhat similar issue on my 2016 Kia Optima. Got about the same level of car know-how as you, I suppose, so I'm speaking from that angle. Had some trouble with the handbrake and it turned out it was due to a faulty electric motor in the brake caliper. Bottom line, it was a workshop job for me and cost me 505€. Just out of curiosity, does your handbrake show any error messages or is it just not functioning well? Knowing the symptoms a bit more might be insightful. Best regards.

Hey, thanks for the swift response. No, I haven't seen any error codes popping up on the dash, it just doesn't seem to be holding the car as securely as it used to. Quite unnerving, really. Yeah, it seems I might have to take it into the shop. I'm currently at 64812KM, and my last service was a couple of months ago, they didn't spot any defects then. Just wanted to get some ideas before I handed it over. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Cheers!

Hey no problem happy to help where I can. It sounds like you're experiencing what I did: the handbrake wasn't throwing any faults or dash warnings, it just didn’t secure the car as it should. Unsafe, for sure! I'd say, get it to a workshop soon, handbrake malfunctioning is not something you'd want to ignore. Plus, sometimes, the error codes might not appear on the dashboard due to a communication error in the ECU, which the mechanics would have a better look at. In my case, it was the motor in the brake caliper, as I mentioned. Remember, though, that every car behaves differently when it comes to wear and tear. The earlier you get it checked, the better. All the best hope it's just a minor fix for your Pro Ceed!

Appreciate the advice. Quite a relief to hear from someone who's had a similar issue…and lived to tell the tale! Didn't think about the communication error in the ECU, but it makes sense. Yup, I reckon it's the right time to head into the shop before this gets any worse. Thank you for giving me the heads-up on what the problem could be and the potential cost ahead, feels good being a bit prepared. Fingers crossed it's just a quick n' easy fix when they get under the hood! Thanks again, and best of luck with your Optima. Cheers!

Reset electric handbrake KIA Sportage 2015 with Carly?

Hi Frank, while Carly is a great tool for reading and clearing fault codes, it may not be able to reset or recalibrate the electric handbrake on your KIA Sportage 2015. This is a more complex procedure that often requires specialized diagnostic equipment and software that most dealerships or workshops have. I would recommend taking your vehicle to a professional mechanic for this task. Please let us know how it goes and if you have any other questions.
