Seeking Advice on Troubleshooting 2011 Diesel Nissan XTrail's Engine Problems

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Hey folks, need a quick advice here. I'm having a bit of a problem with my 2011 Diesel Nissan XTrail. Off late, I've spotted some issues: things like the check engine light popping up, the engine feeling a bit wonky and not as powerful, jerks during acceleration, stalling at idle, and even black smoke puffing out on revving. It's got me thinking, could this be due to some anomalies in the engine intake quantity? If anyone has had the same problem and got it sorted at the workshop, could you share your experience and any specific pointers on troubleshooting? Would appreciate your 2 cents on this!

Hey, sounds like you're having a rough time with your Nissan. I had a similar issue not too long ago with my 2013 Nissan Murano, pretty similar model, isn't it? Now, I don't claim to be a car expert, just have some experience under my belt. My mechanic said there was a leak in the intake system which was messing things up. It took me around 425 Euro to get it fixed, a bit pricey, but trust me, so worth it, the car runs like a dream now. These symptoms you've mentioned do hint towards a problem with the intake system, so I think you might be on the right track. If you don't mind, could you share a few more details about your XTrail? Like mileage, maintenance history, recent servicing, and things like that. It could help in nailing down the problem. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply! Glad to hear that your Murano is back to its smooth running. Interesting that you mention an intake system leak; I think I'll have to get that checked out for my XTrail as well. As for more details, she's clocked in at around 84843 KM. Last service was a regular one, oil and filter change, nothing major. Definitely hasn't seen a big overhaul in a while. Sounds like that might have to change soon though, eh? Will keep you posted on how it goes with the intake system check. Fingers crossed, doesn't burn a hole in my pocket!

No worries, glad to pass on what I know! Trust me, early detection is half the battle won. Speaking from experience, regular services sure go a long way in keeping the car healthy, but sometimes certain things just give away, especially given the heavy mileage. Given your symptoms, an intake system check certainly seems worthwhile. But also, consider getting the air filter and fuel injection system looked at while you're at it. It's not so costly and can really help in diagnosing related issues. Fingers crossed for you, and remember, better to get it sorted now than risk a bigger breakdown on the road. Let's hope it's nothing major! Keep us posted on how things go, yeah? Good luck!

That's good advice! It does seem like I need an extensive check done. Air filter and fuel injection, got it. Guess I’ve been taking these lighter issues for granted. I appreciate your help and I'm feeling a little better knowing what steps to take next. You're right, it's definitely better sorting this out now rather than risking a breakdown. Will definitely keep you folks updated on the progress. Thanks again for your time and advice, much appreciated. Cheers!
