Stalling while idling

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my 2016 Diesel Volvo V90. It's showing some tell-tale signs - black smoke on acceleration, engine light on, engine shutting off, losing power, unsteady performance, jerking when I put my foot down, terrible fuel economy, pungent exhaust smell, and sometimes stalling while idling. I've got a sneaky feeling it might be due to a fault in the low-pressure fuel system, but keen to hear from anyone who's had similar issues and what they found out. What did your workshop do to fix it? Any insight or advice would be really appreciated. Cheers!

Hey, ran into a similar glitch with my 2014 Diesel Volvo XC60. I have some experience with cars, although I'm no mechanic. Saw similar faults like yours - the engine went all jerky, smoke was jet black, plus the check engine light was blinkin' constantly. I took it to my local workshop, brilliant chaps! Top bloke diagnosed it as incorrect software values for the fuel pump, which coincidentally could be causing your problem too. Sorted the issue in no time, cost me about 45 Euro. Not too shabby! If ya can, share some more info like your current mileage, maintenance history, or any warning codes you might've seen. Might be able to dig up some more specific advice. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! That's a great point about the fuel pump and software values, haven't thought about that. You got off easy with a 45 euro fix, good on ya . In terms of extra info, my Volvo's about to hit 25070 KM on the odometer. Can't remember the last warning code, but it's due for service soon. Might get the workshop guys to check out your suggestion. Cheers for the insight!

No worries, glad to help! Given your pretty low mileage and seeing the problems you're experiencing, I reckon it's definitely a good idea to get the lads at the workshop on it during your service. On a different note though, with the check engine light on, it could also be worth checking the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Engine stalling and power loss could be due to a faulty ECU since it manages pretty much all of the engine's functions. Got into a bit of a scrape with my XC60, turned out to be the ECU acting up, throwing off a bunch of sensor readings and causing issues similar to yours. Just remember to ask the boys to keep an eye on the low-pressure fuel system as well. Hope they’ll manage to find exactly what’s causing all the hassles. Keep us posted, always interesting to see how these things work out. Good luck!

Bingo! Now that you mention the ECU, it's got me thinking. Makes sense since it controls almost everything in the engine department. Appreciate the heads up on those possible culprits! I'll make sure to get the guys in the workshop to double-check both the fuel system and the ECU during the upcoming service. Fingers crossed, we can sort this out without breaking the bank. Cheers for the sound advice! Will keep you updated on how it goes. Appreciate the help again!
