Seeking Advice on Resolving 2011 Volvo C70 Diesel Problems: Black Smoke, Check-Engine Light, DPF Regeneration Failure

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Hey guys, need some help with my 2011 Volvo C70 Diesel. It's spewing black smoke on acceleration, there's a constant check-engine light on, jerking when I step on it, and the exhaust smell is stronger than usual. I've spotted a DPF regeneration failure too and reckon it could be due to heavy load on the diesel particulate filter. Has anyone else faced similar issues? Any advice on how you tackled this at a workshop? Would love to hear your insights to troubleshoot this beast. Thanks!

Hey, had a similar farce happen with my 2013 Volvo S60 Diesel. Just an average Joe when it comes to cars but managed to stumble my way through. Took it down to my local workshop, lads there hinted at a defective Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Turned out they were right; the DPF was internally defective. Bit of a bummer, had to fork out about 1550 Euro to get a new one fit and sorted out. Might sound a bit dim, but have you checked your VIN and overall vehicle condition? That info would help me and the others give you further advice on other potential culprits for the DPF issue.

Hey, cheers for the advice! I did have a hunch about the DPF - looks like I'm heading the same way with a replacement. My Volvo has been running about 147132 KM so it's had some mileage on it. As for the VIN and overall condition, the ride is well-maintained and the latest service didn't raise any alarms. Guess sometimes, it's just a stroke of bad luck, eh? Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, really appreciate it!

Hey there again! Yeah, unfortunately, these DPF issues can be a real pain with the older diesels. Given your mileage, it really isn't that surprising. Remember, it's not just about heavy load responsibilities that rattle the DPF. Poor quality fuel, short cold trips, and even a struggling turbo can lead to excessive carbon accumulation, setting off that whole circus you've been experiencing. Just like you, I also took good care of my Volvo S60, but sometimes it’s like resisting fate. You know, rust always wins. When you do make it to your mechanic, you might want to ask them if it's sensible to also check the EGR valve. After my DPF incident, I found out they function in tandem and often a dysfunctional EGR valve can cause soot to clog up the DPF prematurely. Anyway, you seem to have a good handle on things. Here’s hoping the DPF changeover solves your problems. Safe driving and good luck with the beast!

Hey, thanks for the comeback! Yeah, can’t really outrun the inevitable, far as some parts are concerned. You brought up a great point about the EGR valve, didn't consider how closely linked it could be with the DPF. I'll definitely have it checked. You've given me plenty to discuss with the mechanic. Appreciate the wisdom and here's hoping it’s a smooth fix for my Volvo. Will keep you all posted on how it goes. Lets see who wins this round - me or the beast. Cheers and ride safe!
