Seeking Advice on Potential Glow Plug Issues in 2017 Hyundai ix20 Diesel Engine

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Poor fuel economy

Pre-glow light won't turn off

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey, my 2017 Hyundai ix20 with a Diesel engine is acting a bit weird lately. I've noticed issues like a perpetually lit pre-glow light, black smoke during acceleration, check engine light coming on, longer cold start times, starting issues, increased fuel consumption, and a problematic DPF regeneration. I'm suspecting it might be a busted glow plug but I'd appreciate any insights or similar experiences you’ve had. How did you or your garage resolve the issue? Cheers in advance for any tips or advice.

Hey there! I had a somewhat similar issue with my 2015 Hyundai i30 Diesel a while back. I'm no certified mechanic, but I've poked around under the hood a fair bit, so, some experience I guess. The symptoms you've described scream glow plug problem. Mine started acting up too: slow cold starts, annoying engine lights, the works. Went to my trusty repair shop, got the glow plugs checked, and yep, it was worn out. Wasn't cheap though, cost me around 560 Euro in total to replace it. However, I need a bit more info to be sure. What's the mileage on your ix20? Does it have a history of similar issues? Who usually does your car service? Just trying to get a clearer picture here, then we can look at your next moves.

Hey, appreciate the fast reply! My ix20 has covered 32603 KM so far. I've been taking it to the authorized service center for all its services, latest service was done just a month back. Prior to this, there were no similar issues since I bought it. So this sudden array of problems is worrying me quite a bit. And damn, 560 Euro seems pretty steep for a glow plug replacement! Is it normally this expensive?

Hey again! You're definitely doing the right thing by sticking to the authorized service center, that always helps to keep things in order. Judging by your ix20's mileage and your regular servicing, it's a bit surprising that you're facing this issue. A glow plug problem isn't unheard of in our Hyundai Diesels, but it's not that common this early, unless it's a manufacturing defect. However, as they say, machines can be unpredictable! About the cost, yeah, it did hurt my wallet a bit when I replaced mine! The cost of every glow plug can vary anywhere from 30 to 100 Euro, depending on the brand and quality. Then there's the labor cost. But here's the thing, it's not always necessary to replace all of them, only the faulty one(s). My case was a bit unlucky as all of them turned out to be malfunctioning. But don't worry just yet. Your case might just be a single faulty glow plug or something else entirely. Best suggestion would be to get your car checked by professionals. Have them run a diagnostic test on the engine and the glow plugs. They'll be able to tell you the exact issue and the cost you might be looking at. Keep us posted on how it goes. We're all here if you need more help with your Hyundai Diesel. Good luck!

Cheers for the great advice and information! It's been a bit of an assurance hearing from someone who's had a similar issue. I'll get the ix20 down to the service center tomorrow, and have them check the engine and the glow plugs. Hopefully, it’s just a single rogue glow plug and not all of them like in your case! Fingers crossed it won't cost an arm and a leg. I'll keep you updated with the details as soon as I get any. Thanks again really appreciate it!
