Seeking Advice on Potential Camshaft Adjustment Issue in 2017 Fiat 124 Gasoline Engine

Valve adjustment noise

Jerking on acceleration

Metal shavings in oil

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Weird engine noise

Loss of engine power

Hi! I've been having a bit of trouble with my 2017 Fiat 124 Gasoline engine. The old girl's check engine light has been on, there's been a loss of engine power, unsteady engine, jerking on acceleration, bad fuel economy, a weird noise like the valves need adjusting and metal shavings in the oil. I've got a hunch that there could be a camshaft adjustment issue but would appreciate other opinions. Any advice or similar experiences to share? What solutions did your workshop offer? Thanks in advance for any help or experiences you can share!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 Fiat 500L a while back. I should mention that I have some experience with cars, but this one really threw me for a loop at first. Took my Fiat to my trusty local workshop and the mechanic did a run-through. Turns out, one of the neck shaft solenoid valves was defective causing the trouble. Ended up having to shell out about 250 Euro to get that problem sorted. It could be that you have a similar issue with your Fiat 124. Could you provide a bit more info about your vehicle and any recent maintenance or repairs you've done? That might help me give you a more accurate guess. A bit more detail can go a long way. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for the response, really appreciate it! My Fiat's been through a good bit- serviced very recently, at the 56,217 KM mark. Parts-wise, nothing major changed... just the usual oil, filters, and liquids stuff. Your experience sounds quite similar to what I'm going through... not looking forward to the possible solenoid bill though! I guess I'll have to get my local garage to take a look. Thanks again for your help!

No worries happy to help! Sounds like your Fiat has had a rather smooth ride up until now, despite the current problem. Just want to mention that while it's totally possible that you've got a similar solenoid valve problem like I did with my 500L, it's also worth considering that camshaft adjuster issue you initially suspected. That Metal shavings in the oil bit you mentioned? It's quite worrisome and could very well have a connection with a faulty camshaft adjustment. It would explain the jerking on acceleration, drop in power, unsteady engine operation, poor fuel economy, and the weird noise. A dodgy cam adjuster can wear out the engine components prematurely causing metal shavings and possibly the valve adjustment noise you're noticing. Honestly, I would take it to a trusty mechanic asap, preferably one familiar with Fiats, and mention these issues specifically. Hope you can get things sorted without breaking the bank. Wishing you and your Fiat the best of luck!

Cheers for all that insight! Your input was really helpful. I have to admit the metal shavings in the oil had me on edge, and it's looking more likely that the camshaft adjuster could be the culprit. I'm going to take it down to the local Fiat specialist and get to the bottom of this. I'll make sure they're focused on those camshaft and solenoid possibilities. Here's hoping it's not a bankrupting job! Thanks again for your time - and best of luck with your Fiat too!
