Seeking Advice on Overheating Issue and Check Engine Light in 2010 Mazda Atenza with Possible Coolant Thermostat Problem

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey guys, I've been dealing with an odd issue with my 2010 Mazda Atenza with a Gasoline engine. She's been overheating lately and the check engine light is on too. I've got a hunch that there might be an issue with the coolant thermostat. Anybody out there experienced something similar? I'd appreciate any troubleshooting advice or tips on what you did to fix it when you took it to the workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I've got a 2008 Mazda CX-7 that had a similar issue a while back. I'm no mechanic, just an average Joe with some experience tinkering around with cars. In my case, the problem turned out to be a damaged wiring harness. After some guesswork, took it to my local mechanic, who fixed it for about 110 Euro. Before I dish out any detailed advice, it would be helpful to know a few more things about your Atenza. Like, are there any specific error codes coming up? And have you noticed anything else unusual besides the overheating and the check engine light? Looking forward to helping you out.

Hey, cheers for getting back. I haven't checked for any additional error codes yet - will get an OBD scan done over the weekend. There isn't anything else odd going on, apart from the overheating and the check engine light. I had this car serviced about 3 months back, by the way. And yes, she has clocked 80632 km so far! I'll try to provide more info after the scan. Thanks for your help!

Hi again, No problem at all, we're all here to help each other out. This might be a shot in the dark until you do the OBD scan, but based on what you've said, I wouldn't rule out the thermostat just yet. Overheating and a check engine light can indeed indicate a thermostat problem. On my Mazda, when the wiring harness issue came up, it was joined by other symptoms like irregular idling and some power loss. But your case doesn't seem to have any of that. It's also important to note that regular services may not always catch a malfunctioning thermostat, especially if it's stuck open. You might not even get a warning until it gets stuck closed and your engine overheats. So after the scan, if you don't find any other fault codes, you might want to consider getting the thermostat checked or replaced. And don't forget to ensure the coolant level is correct, since low coolant can escalate overheating problems. Keep me updated after the scan. Here's hoping it's a fixable and inexpensive issue. Good luck!

Hey there, Many thanks for the insights - really valuable advice! I'll definitely check the coolant level and chat with my mechanic about the thermostat. Gonna proceed with that OBD scan and see what comes up. You've given me some peace of mind over this whole mess. I'll keep you posted. Cheers for your help!
