Seeking Advice on Lexus IS Diesel Issues: Black Smoke, Engine Warning Light, Power Loss, and DPF Regeneration Problems

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Hey all, I'm having a bit of a nightmare with my 2012 Lexus IS Diesel. Recently it's been kicking out black smoke when I hit the gas, the check engine light won't turn off, there's a noticeable drop in power, and it smells pretty bad out the exhaust. To top it off, DPF regeneration isn't working as it should. I'm suspecting a heavy load on the diesel particulate filter might be causing all this, but wanted to see if anybody else has had a similar experience? How did you guys get it sorted out & what was your experience at the workshop? Any insights would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Hey, sounds like you're dealing with a real bear of a problem. I've got a 2013 Lexus IS diesel, similar beast, ran into a similarly troublesome issue not long back. I figured we're sort of in the same boat given that you're also in Lexus territory. Now, I wouldn't claim to be any kind of car expert, but let's say I've got some experience under my belt trying to fix issues that crop up. I ended up taking my ride to a trusted workshop. They ran some diagnostics and turns out, like your suspicion, the DPF had gone internally defective, which was causing all the commotion. Bit of a hit to the wallet, as it cost me a cool 1550 Euro to get it sorted. Hate to say it but sounds like you might be looking at a similar price tag. By any chance, did you recently have any new parts installed or engine modding done? Those details might help me get a clearer picture and offer some further advice. Hope this helps though and good luck with it!

Hey! Thanks for the reply and sharing your experience. Bummer to hear about the cost, but at least you got it sorted out. To answer your question: no recent mods or parts installed. She's just been rolling as is from the last service at 111,835 km without any alterations. Looks like a professional diagnosis is the way forward then! Thanks again for your help.

Hey there! Well, at least it's good to hear there's no recent mods or changes done from your end. Those can often add to the complexity! Since you had the last servicing done at a very standard time, I doubt it contributed to your current situation. From my experience, knowing no major modifications have occurred gives me more confidence that the issue is indeed likely related to the DPF, same as my previous problem. Honestly, I'd strongly recommend getting a pro to look at the car- diagnostics and all. Industry tech tends to be better than anything we'd have in our garages. Jeez, I still wince remembering my service bill, but it’s definitely worth the peace of mind knowing your car's all up to snuff. Brace for impact on the price tag, but remember it's all in the name of a smoothly running car. Do let me know how the diagnosis goes. And hey, we all weathered some nasty car troubles before, haven't we? You'll get through this too! Good luck!

Hey, thanks again for your insights. The sleepless nights this has been giving me, thinking of the bill makes my wallet cry already! But you're right, better safe than sorry. Just a matter of biting the bullet and getting it checked out by professionals. I'll keep you posted with what the diagnosis is. Appreciate you responding and sharing your wisdom! Time to brave the storm, wish me luck!
