Seeking Advice on Kia Forte Steering Issues and ABS/DSC System Malfunctions

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

Power steering without function

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, I could use some advice. I've got a 2018 Kia Forte with a gasoline engine, clocked around 180,522 km. Lately, I'm having issues with my ABS/DSC system and power steering which are non-functional, not to mention the constant vibrations in the steering wheel. I reckon it might be a steering angle sensor defect considering symptoms. However, after a previous not-so-great experience with a mechanic, I’m a bit hesitant to dive right in. Anyone experienced something similar and how did things go with your mechanic? Would appreciate some feedback!

Hey! Quite interesting you mention this, I faced something eerily similar with my 2015 Kia Optima not too long ago. Got the same shaky steering wheel and non-functional ABS/DSC system too. Finally got a diagnostic run and turned out to be an incorrect coding of the steering angle sensor indeed. I gotta tell you, this definitely falls into the more serious category of car troubles. Any issue messing up your power steering or braking system is certainly not one to ignore. Without getting technical here, essentially your steering angle sensor passes on info to these systems, so an incorrect coding can lead to disarray. At my trusty garage, the mechanic sorted it out by reprogramming the sensor. It's a fairly straightforward process for them and doesn't run into any major mechanical work or part replacement. I'd say it's worth braving your reservations about mechanics for this one. Just pick a reliable place or even might be worth considering an authorized service center. Just remember, sooner rather than later is crucial with this kind of issue. Hope it all works out for you!

Hey there, Wow, your experience sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with, I'm kind of relieved I'm not alone here. You sure averted disaster! So, it was really about reprogramming the sensor, huh? Honestly, given the part about 'sooner rather than later', which makes a lot of sense considering the seriousness of these issues, I'm ready to put my mechanic-anxiety aside and get it sorted. If you don't mind me prying a bit into your expenses, can you recall how much you had to part with for the reprogramming? Also, just out of curiosity, did you have to face any other problems related to this after sorting the sensor out? Cheers for your help!

Hey again, Absolutely, the sooner it's dealt with, the better it is for you and your trusty ride. And about the money bit, yep, I remember alright. It cost me about 195.00 € to get the steering angle sensor's coding fixed up. And I've got to say, considering the headaches these issues were giving me, it was cash well spent. And bonus is, it's not one of those things where you fix one problem and another pops up – once that coding issue was sorted out, my car was back to normal, running smooth as ever with no more problems related to this issue. Cheers back, and here's to you getting your Kia back in tip-top shape!

Hi again, Good to know that the fix was a success in the long run. It sounds like it definitely was worth the cost considering the peace of mind it brought you. I’m looking to get it done under 200 € as you did. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and advice. It’s definitely helped ease my doubts! Now, I'm determined to brave the mechanic's and get that sensor reprogrammed, can't wait to have my Kia running smoothly again. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks a ton! Safe driving!
