Seeking Advice on Flickering Lights and Weak Battery in 2020 Lexus RC Hybrid: Potential Battery Sensor Problem?

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey everyone, I've got a 2020 Lexus RC Hybrid here acting a bit odd. Noticed the lights are dimming and flickering and the battery seems weak at start-up. Could this be a battery sensor issue? Would really appreciate any tips on troubleshooting this or hearing similar experiences. Also looking for info on what to expect if I have to take it in for repairs. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there! Sounds like you're having a similar issue I went through with my 2018 Lexus GS Hybrid not too long ago. I'd say I have some experience with cars, not a pro by any means - just an enthusiastic tinkerer. My car also started showing dimming lights and a weak start-up, turned out to be a defective battery sensor microprocessor. Ended up taking it to my local workshop where the guys there diagnosed and confirmed my suspicions. It was about 315 Euro to get it fixed, not the cheapest but well worth it for peace of mind. Make sure you've got all your vehicle specifics handy (model, mileage, any previous issues, etc.) when you go to your workshop. It really helps them to pinpoint the problem quicker. Hope your issue gets sorted soon!

Fantastic advice! Appreciate you sharing your experience with your 2018 Lexus GS. My RC is already at around 199,081 KM so I agree, it's time I followed your lead and took it to the workshop too. Bit of a hit to the wallet, but like you said, it's worth it for the peace of mind. I did have my last service very recently, so I’m hoping this is just a minor thing. Fingers crossed my battery sensor microprocessor is just acting up like in your GS. Thanks again and will keep you posted on what happens!

No problem, happy to help out a fellow Lexus owner! Yeah, those high kilometers might just be catching up to our beloved hybrids, eh? At the end of the day, though, these cars are beasts – bit of maintenance here and there and they'll serve us well, for sure. If your service was recent, the mechanics would have probably picked up on a failing battery. Since they didn't, it could indeed just be the sensor acting up a bit. You're on the right track thinking that. In my experience, a messed up sensor creates just the type of symptoms you described. So no need to stress too much yet. Took my GS to the workshop around the 150,000 KM mark, and apart from the sensor thing, it's been pretty much smooth cruising. So fingers crossed your RC follows the same script! Looking forward to hearing how it all goes. Here's hoping it's nothing too serious. Keep us posted!

Definitely hoping for some smooth cruising soon! Thanks for the reassuring words and for sharing your knowledge. I'm fairly optimistic this might be just a sensor issue now. Your experience at the 150,000 KM mark gives me a solid benchmark and a lot of hope for my RC. Thanks for the words of wisdom. Hugely appreciated! Gonna schedule a workshop visit soon and I'll definitely let you know how it turns out. Here's to some smooth miles on the road for both of us! Cheers!
