Seeking Advice on Fixing 2012 Mazda RX8's Electric Handbrake Malfunction

Electical handbrake is not working

Hey all, I've got a 2012 Mazda RX8 with a Gasoline engine that's been playing up lately. The major issue is that the electric handbrake isn't working at all. I'm guessing it's a malfunction but I'd appreciate any specific tips or experiences you guys can share. How did you go about fixing this in your workshop and what obstacles did you face? Cheers!

Hey there, Had something really similar with my '10 Mazda MX5. Pretty low on the car expertise scale myself, but gave it a shot. Turned out it was the electric motor in the brake caliper that was shot. Had to get my regular workshop to replace it - set me back a cool 505 Euro. Stung a bit, but hey, the ol' girl is back to her top form. Btw, could you give more info on your RX8? Like mileage, how often you service it, stuff like that. Might be able to give you a bit more on what to watch for. Keep the rubber side down!

Hey! I appreciate the quick response! The beast has 212743 KM on the odometer. Usually, I keep up with regular services, but the last one was a few months ago. Sticking to the topic, I think I'm looking at a similar problem with the electric motor as you. Gotta get that checked soon. Hoping it won't hit my pocket too hard. Cheers for the heads up. Drive safe!

Hey there, Sounds like your ride gave you a decent amount of service, kudos for that! The mileage is indeed quite high but it's great that you keep up with regular maintenance. In my case, the electric motor issue showed up around the 150k mark, so it might just be the case with your RX8. Brace yourself for the expense, though. These electric motors aren't exactly cheap, and if it's indeed the problem, well, it’s a necessary fix. My advice: get it to the workshop ASAP. The last thing you want to deal with is a possible accident because of a malfunctioning brake, right? Stay safe on the roads!

Hey! For sure, keeper her in good shape has been a top priority. I figured there was some kind of mile marker for this issue. And you're right, safety first - don't want to risk it with faulty brakes. The expense is going to sting, but can't put a price on peace of mind, right? Got an appointment slated for tomorrow first thing. Here's to hoping it's a quick fix. Thanks again for the advice, means a lot. Take care on the roads!
