Seeking Advice on Engine Issues and High Fuel Consumption in 2012 Volvo S40 Diesel

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Car won't start

Shaking while idling

Poor fuel economy

Engine shuts off by itself

Title: Need Help with Unexpected Engine Problems in my 2012 Volvo S40 Diesel Hey guys, hope you're all cruising fine. I'm hitting some bumps with my 2012 Volvo S40 Diesel lately. Pushing 159,647 KMS on her, and she's been a dream 'til recently. I need your two cents on an annoying issue. Lately, she's been losing power, jerks whenever I try to accelerate, and even shuts off on her own. The 'Check Engine' light has also been playing twinkle-twinkle star (isn't that just a joy?). Not to mention, starting her feels like a game of Russian Roulette, and she's guzzling way more fuel than she usually does. Plus, she shakes like a leaf when idling. Long story short, a friend suggested I might need a reset for the quantity drift compensation. Anyone with a similar predicament? How was your experience with your mechanic? Hopefully, not as dreadful as my previous one. Hoping for some insights, thanks!

Hey! Yeah, know exactly where you're coming from. Had almost the exact same issue about a year ago on my 2015 Volvo S60 Diesel - good thing I've got a reliable garage around the corner. This losing power and shaking could definitely be caused by a heap of things, but my woes were primarily down to a faulty injector. Your symptoms sound awfully familiar. The "Check Engine" light flickering, increased fuel consumption, and especially the shaking idle all line up with what I experienced. So here's the deal. The injector is like the bartender for your engine, mixing the perfect cocktail of air and fuel. When it goes on the fritz, it can mess up the engine's performance like you wouldn't believe. As you suggested, resetting the quantity drift compensation could be required (this adjusts how much fuel each cylinder is getting), but it's important to check whether the injector itself is up to snuff. Had to have the injector replaced in my garage - wasn't the most pleasant of experiences, that's for sure. It's quite a task and requires a careful examination of the whole fuel injection system. Replace any defective parts, reset everything and make sure the whole shebang is running smoothly again. It's definitely a noteworthy issue, but once fixed, your S40 should be back banging the same beat. Hope this helps, and keep us posted!

Hey there! Wow, sounds like you've been down this rocky road before. I really appreciate you sharing your experience - kind of makes me feel less alone in this annoying saga. Your description of the injector certainly puts things into perspective (gave me a chuckle, too!), and with symptoms matching, it might very well be the issue here too. Kind of dreaded it could be injectors, but our beloved four-wheeled beasts have their quirks, eh? You talked about having the injector replaced at your local garage. Any recollection of approxily how much that set you back? And since the fix, any new gremlins popping up related to our good friend, the injector? Thanks again for your help!

Hey again! Oh, I tell ya, it's quite a journey when your ride starts giving you grief - but hey, it's all in the game of loving our metal buddies, right? As for the cost of fixing this sassy injector - she was a pricey one. All in all, that particular adventure cost me around 515 Euro, but it did turn things around significantly. Not exactly a pleasant sight on the bank statement, but certainly worth it for a smooth and efficient ride again. And guess what? The quantity drift compensation that's been bugging you - got that sorted out at the same time, and it did make a real difference. So, not all bad, eh? Since getting it fixed, she's been cruising like a charm, no more nasty surprises from the injector department or any other for that matter. I hope this helps, and trust me, once your S40 gets these bits all sorted, you'll be feeling the breeze through your hair again! Cheers!

Hello again! I can't thank you enough for providing such detailed insights! You're absolutely right, problem or two but these metal companions sure are worth the trouble. Looking at your cost breakdown, seems like repair isn't as skin stripping as I thought. Right, it's a distinguishable chunk of money but certainly less horrifying than those wild figures my mind was drumming up. I'm glad to hear the injector fix coupled with the adjusting of quantity drift compensation worked out so well for you, makes me hopeful. And no new gremlins? That's like the cherry on the top. Soon enough, I guess I’ll be back to the joyous hair-blowing cruise with my Volvo. Thanks for the welly of confidence and chucking in your valuable time and info. Truly appreciate it! Cheers to smooth cruising for all of us! Thanks again!
