Seeking Advice on Diagnosing and Addressing Mixture Control Errors in a 2021 Kia Sorento

Strong exhaust smell

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Jerking on acceleration

|

Check engine light on

|

Longer cold start time

|

Loss of engine power

Hey, got a bit of a head scratcher with my 2021 Kia Sorento with a Gas engine. Been noticing a bunch of odd signs like black smoke puffing out on acceleration, the check-engine light flickering, sluggish cold starts, and decreased horsepower, not to mention a jerky ride and worse gas mileage than usual. There's also a powerful stink from the exhaust. I’m leaning towards a mixture control error with the mix being too rich. Anyone else run into issues like this? I'm curious to hear how you diagnosed and fixed them at your workshop and what you learned from it. Any advice welcomed!

Hey! I ran into a similar problem with my 2019 Kia Sportage a while ago (fewer miles, same gas engine). I'm no pro mechanic, but I've dealt with a few issues on my cars over the years. In my case, turned out the Fuel Pressure Regulator was kaput. This component keeps the fuel in your vehicle's fuel injectors at the correct pressure. Took my Sportage to my usual workshop - I trust them completely as they always do a top job. The blokes ran some diagnostics and found the fuel pressure was all over the place. Once we knew the cause, they replaced the regulator. Set me back about 250 Euro, but the improvement was worth it. However, to more accurately diagnose your problem, I'll need more info about your car – like how many miles it's done, and whether you've made any recent changes to the engine or fuel system. Oh, and when was the last time you replaced your fuel filter? Cheers and hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. Good to know you've had a similar issue with your Kia. My Sorento's racked up 48539 km so far, so it's not exactly old. As for any recent changes, other than regular oil changes, no, nothing in particular. What's really stumped me is that I just got it serviced a short while ago from my regular guys - figured they might find something then, but nada. As for the Fuel Pressure Regulator, I'll get my mechanic to check it out. Maybe I missed something in my earlier service. Let's hope it's not another addition to the expense pile, though. Cheers, appreciate ya.

Hey! No worries bud, happy to help out a fellow Kia driver. Judging from the mileage you shot my way, your Sorento is still a fairly fresh model. So, it might not yet be necessary to replace something like the Fuel Pressure Regulator I mentioned earlier. However, with a recent service and standard maintenance checks not picking up any issues, it does get trickier, especially with the symptoms you've described. I know this might sound fairly basic, but with your kind of symptoms, an overlooked or poorly done oil or air filter replacement could have this kind of result. Got an idea of when the last time was you got those checked? Also, you haven't mentioned any change of fuel type or brand lately? Moving on to a lower grade/different fuel could lead to a poor burn, resulting in these symptoms you got. Triple-check the quality of the fuel you're using and maybe try a different station for a fill-up or two. Keep me posted let's see if we can figure this thing out together. Cheers!

Appreciate the suggestions. Now that you mentioned it, the air filter got replaced during the last service. Who knows, maybe something went south there. And no, I haven't switched to a different fuel or brand recently - been sticking to the usual premium unleaded. On a hunch, I'll get a fresh tank from a different station, just to cross that potential issue off. Besides, it also doesn't hurt to inspect that air filter and oil again. Thanks for the help and for not leaving me high and dry. Will keep you posted. Good luck keeping your own wheels moving. Cheers.

Hello Bryan43g, the P2196 code indicates that the oxygen sensor is detecting a rich fuel mixture in the exhaust, which could be caused by a variety of issues. The jerking and whistling sound you're experiencing could be related to this. I would suggest starting with the simplest checks first. Inspect the air filter and make sure it's clean and properly installed. Then, check for any visible leaks in the exhaust system. If these checks don't reveal anything, it might be a more complex issue like a faulty oxygen sensor or fuel pressure regulator. I would recommend taking your car to a professional mechanic for a thorough inspection, especially since this issue could potentially affect the safety and performance of your vehicle. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?

Hello thanks for your answer the filter and all that are new what came out in the diagnostic machine was sensor 1 bank 1 I think it was the lambda sensor I have put new and so far so good.

And it was also injecting more fuel than normal, i.e. rich mixture and it turns out that it was all done by the oxygen sensor and the lambda sensor.

That's great to hear, Bryan43g! It sounds like replacing the oxygen and lambda sensors has resolved the issue. These sensors play a crucial role in maintaining the correct air-fuel mixture, so it's not surprising that a fault in these could lead to a rich fuel mixture. Keep an eye on your car's performance and fuel consumption in the coming weeks to ensure everything is running smoothly. If you notice any other issues or have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Hello good morning a month or so ago I got engine failure and it turns out that it was the lambda sensor 1 bank 1 sensor change the probe for a new one because the mixture was rich and it turns out that since then until today I still inject too much fuel I notice because it has a lot of power ie has rich mixture and I do not know what it can be haver if you can help me thanks
