Poor fuel economy

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, I've been having a weird issue with my 2010 Kia Magentis. The check engine light is constantly on, seeing some power loss and my engine keeps turning off out of nowhere. Also, it's running unsteady, like jerking when accelerating and I've noticed poor fuel economy than usual. I'm suspecting the throttle valve potentiometer might be the culprit but I ain't 100% sure. Any tips or similar experiences you've dealt with? How did you get it fixed at the garage? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there! I'm no pro mechanic, but I have some experience with cars and faced a similar issue with my 2008 Kia Optima. I think your suspicion about the throttle valve is right on. I had problems with the internal mechanics of the throttle valve. It cost me a surprising 345 Euro to get it all sorted at the garage. The fault was within the valve itself, so unfortunately I couldn't patch it up at home. By any chance, do you know if your car has been in for maintenance recently or if there have been any modifications made? Sometimes these things can mess with the throttle valve. Can you also share a bit more info about your current mileage and driving conditions? This might help us pinpoint the issue a little better. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks for your advice. My Kia Magentis hasn't seen any modifications at all and the last service it had was around 4000 KM ago, pretty much just your bog standard MOT. Currently, it's sitting at 130848 KM. Mostly, I take it for both city drives and some long trips every now and then. I'll definitely look into bringing my car into the garage and having them check the throttle valve. Your experience with your Optima really has me convinced it might be the same problem!

Hey! That's a good move. From what you've told me about your Magentis, the issues really do line up with the throttle valve fault I experienced on my Optima. Especially given your current mileage and the mix of city and long drives, it's possible wear and tear is showing on the throttle valve. When you take it in, make sure they thoroughly check it out. Not gonna lie, it was a bit of a nasty surprise on the repair cost for me but my car's been running great ever since. Plus, the peace of mind you get is priceless. I hope your experience turns out the same way and your problems are resolved by addressing the throttle valve! Safe driving!

Thanks again! Your experience and advice have been really very helpful. I'll be sure to emphasize the throttle valve issue when I take my Magentis to the garage. As you said, peace of mind is priceless, especially when you're dealing with a potentially major issue like this. Your input took me a step closer to figuring out my car's weird behavior. Hopefully, I'll be back on the road smoothly soon, fingers crossed. Cheers!
